—¿Me escucha señor?
—No siento nada —respondió.
—Yo iré a ver a Vielma y Ortega.

After stacking the ammunition crates along the entire wall of the ship's hold, as a measure to prevent the robot's sensors from detecting their movements inside the ship or worse, what they had prepared for it; the five men set out to await their attacker.
At the bottom of the hold, camouflaged behind a pile of empty crates and partially hidden by the darkness inside, they had placed the electromagnetic railgun they had barely managed to assemble.
That weapon was definitely not meant to be operated by a human, it was about two meters forty long and must have weighed about ninety kilograms, unloaded. It required one operator to take care of the ammunition, which could only be loaded one at a time, while another operated the trigger. But that was not the problem, the complication was to aim, because whoever operated the trigger could not reach the sight, something that the one who loaded the ammunition could do, and at the same time, only the one who pulled the trigger could move, with difficulty, from one side to the other the weapon, which was resting on a box, which had been conditioned for that purpose, since they did not have a tripod.
The strange configuration with which they had mounted the weapon made it necessary for the two operators to take aim; fortunately and unfortunately, the space was so small that they would probably only have the opportunity to fire one shot, and the weapon was pointed in the direction of the entrance, at such an angle that it should hit whatever was coming through the door and if, as they thought, given the dimensions of the box in which it came, that thing must have been at least two meters eighty high, it would be a pretty big target.
Vielma and Ortega would be in charge of firing the shot while the others were in charge of guiding the thing inside, they needed it to be that way, because outside the ship they would be at a disadvantage, since they would not be able to aim and would be exposed to their shots.
Petersen positioned himself on the outside of the ship, covering himself with some metal parts they had taken from inside, while Wilson and Benitez hid on both sides of the hole in the hull through which they had access to the interior.
It had been about three hours since they had made the call to the station in orbit, when they heard the sound of something very heavy falling to the ground in the middle of the forest, a few meters in front, it was clear that that thing knew it could not wait much longer to finish what it had started, or its task would be difficult with the arrival of the rescue mission.
Wilson gave a signal to Vielma and Ortega, who prepared to fire. Ortega, in charge of loading the weapon and using the sight, placed one of the heavy spheres in the chamber and activated the loading lever, which made the weapon begin to buzz with the rhythm of the coils that were fed by the heavy power source, located under the barrel; Vielma removed the heavy safety catch, adjusted the position of the gun according to Ortega's gestures and placed the palm of his hand on the trigger.
Those who were outside listened as heavy footsteps approached from the forest, shaking the bushes that crossed their path, only now and listening to their noisy footsteps, they realized that, almost at all times, that thing had been at a great distance from them, and probably always on the trees; perhaps when it caught Parson was when it approached them the closest.
If his intention was to finish them off, he would have to come and get them, for they were not going to move, and if he came, he would be the one who would have to expose himself. Benitez, Wilson and Petersen, pointed in the direction of the forest, just where the noise came from; then, between the trees, opening his way with two huge arms, covered with what seemed to be bladders that swelled and contracted like large muscles, moved by the continuous pumping of some kind of hydraulic fluid, the beast that had been stalking them appeared.
It was a colossal android, almost three meters tall, whose body looked like that of a fleshless giant, with all its grotesque musculature, formed by black hydraulic bellows, exhibited on its exterior and a tiny, cyclopean, bullet-shaped head, which protruded as a kind of rounded bulge, growing in the middle of its huge, square shoulders. He was not carrying his weapon, so he had apparently decided to put an end to it with his huge hands, probably foreseeing the little maneuvering space he would have.
Wilson and Benitez, still dumbfounded and almost by instinct, began to fire bursts of impulses with their electric weapons, but that seemed to have not the slightest effect on that machine, which was rapidly approaching them. From the side of the ship, Petersen was also firing unsuccessfully and when he saw that the thing was approaching the entrance of the ship, he dropped his weapon and jumped after it, hung on its back, and tried to hold on to its non-existent neck, while with his knife, he stabbed stab after stab in its shoulder and chest, trying to cut the hydraulic bellows that allowed it to move.
With Petersen hung on its back, the robot lunged at the entrance to the ship, delivering a punch to Benitez, which threw him against one of the walls of ammunition boxes they had made, leaving him buried in them and out of combat, while following the sergeant's example, Wilson also hung on the side of the machine, holding it by the shoulder and arm and began to stab it, while it shook from side to side, trying to shake off both men.
The robot stretched out its left arm, the same one from whose shoulder Wilson was holding on, and with its hand grabbed Petersen by the shoulder and ripped it from his back, throwing him against a wall, while Wilson continued stabbing his back at the nape of his neck, right in the area that had been free at the moment he had detached himself from Petersen.
It was at the moment when Petersen fell to the floor that the robot, already inside the ship, was in front of the gun barrel, then Ortega who was looking through the viewfinder gave the order to Vielma who pulled the trigger, then, the buzzing of the coils intensified at the same time that the projectile traveled through the cannon and for a few fractions of seconds they heard the same sound that preceded each shot of their pursued, only that this time the projectile did not have them as targets.
The golden metal sphere hit the creature in the chest and went through it from one side to the other, grazing the hip plate of Wilson's armor that hung from the monster's shoulder. The machine paused for a moment, which Wilson took advantage of to drop to the ground and leap backwards away from it, staggering for a moment and then collapsing to his knees, finally falling forward and crouching in front of the gun barrel.
Ortega and Vielma saw each other's faces and celebrated the shot, while Wilson watched them from behind the monster that was still on all fours on the ground. When suddenly an intense squeal of bellows straining arose from the creature that stood up again, before the astonished gaze of the three men.
Ortega tried to put a new projectile in the gun's chamber, but before he could do so, the robot rushed at them like a furious rhinoceros, throwing them and the gun to the ends of the room, then turned to where Wilson was and rushed him, but before hitting him, he took him in his hands and slammed him against one of the walls of the ship.
Just at the moment when the machine was about to crush Wilson with its hands, Petersen again threw himself on his back and hung on one of his arms, while clinging with his right arm and hand to the monster's right side, held in his left hand the EMP grenade, which he had removed the safety catch from before jumping, inserted it into a space between the chest muscles left by the projectile and then dropped to the floor, next to the feet of the robot, which he took advantage of to kick him in the back, after dropping Wilson, he took a step forward, seeking to reach Petersen, in the place where he had gone to fall, after being kicked, but before he could advance any further, a burst of light shone throughout the room, accompanied by a deafening sound similar to a crack and an intense blue glow that lasted for a few seconds, extinguishing little by little.
The machine and the men, who had been scattered throughout the room, remained motionless, the grenade had not produced an explosion, or anything that could affect a living being, instead its effect could only damage the machines, as their circuits would fry and stop working.
After a few minutes of calm, from among the pile of ammunition boxes, making his way with great effort and while at the same time removing the armor plates from over his chest, Benitez began to get up, took off his helmet and shook his head, he felt as if he had been hit with a hammer, his armor was now just dead weight, the heavy armor that had once protected him, now only made it difficult for him to move, as the circuits that powered it had been destroyed by the electromagnetic pulse of the grenade.
He looked around and could see Wilson and Petersen, lying on the ground a few feet away from him, one in front and the other to his left; and almost right next to Wilson, the monster was static, standing like a precariously supported sculpture. Benitez stood up, walked over to the machine and gave it a shove, whereupon it collapsed to the ground with a spectacular clatter.
The noise brought Wilson out of his lethargy and he tried to stand up, but like Benitez, the weight of the armor made it difficult, Benitez took a quick step towards him and helped him to take off the heavy attire.
-Can you go on alone? -asked Benitez, after removing his chest plate, helmet and sleeves. -I want to see how the sergeant is.
Dazed by the blows of the machine, Wilson indicated with a gesture that he should go with Petersen.
Benitez approached Petersen, who was lying on his back, several meters away from where the robot was, he could see that he was breathing with difficulty, he removed the breastplate and the helmet visor without moving him.
-Can you hear me, sir? -he asked.
-Yes, but I can't move," Petersen answered in a whisper.
-Tell me if you feel what I'm doing," he asked while touching his abdomen pressing from his sides to the center.
-I don't feel anything," he replied.
-Okay, stay calm, we will see to it that he breathes, while the rescue arrives," said Benitez and walked away to the remains of his armor from where he took out a ventilator mask, returned to Petersen and put it on.
-The nanomachines will soon begin to repair your wounds sergeant," said Wilson who approached Benitez's back as he put the mask on Petersen.
-None of us have nanomachines anymore, at least not working ones, the EMP must have broken them down, just like anything that runs on electricity on this whole ship," said Benitez. -We must get him to the station soon so they can repair the damage to his spine.
-What can I do? -Wilson asked, thinking about how to help Petersen.
-There's not much we can do for him right now. Go outside and try to signal for the rescuers to find us, who should be here soon," replied Benitez. -I'll go see Vielma and Ortega.
Vielma and Ortega were relatively well, some bruises and broken ribs of both and a dislocated shoulder, was the balance of their injuries, nothing that a while of action of the nanomachines could not repair, if they had them, so, after injections of painkillers, they could only wait for the transport that after seeing Wilson's emergency signal, landed several hundred meters from them, in the clearing where Ortega had been miraculously saved from a shot of the monster.
-What the hell happened here? -said one of the rescue team members, seeing them arrive unarmored and battered, as they loaded Sergeant Petersen onto a makeshift stretcher, still wearing his helmet to keep his neck stable, and with a ventilation mask over his face.
-It's a long story," answered Ortega, as he walked ahead of the group, one arm in a sling. -But in a nutshell, what we came for, he tried to kill us.
-And he succeeded in most cases," Wilson continued. -But in the end we took that thing down.
Following the rescue team, a second team was tasked with recovering the bodies of the fallen, under strict orders not to touch anything inside the ship, or anything other than the bodies of the other ten members of the mission.
Finally, five hours after the second rescue team left, a team from LAGUNA Industries would arrive to finish picking up the wreckage of the ship and the lost equipment. On board the ship, a representative of the board of directors was waiting for the result of the operation, while taking a sip of his coffee cup, one of the technicians in charge of recovering the equipment approached him.
-The device has already been recovered, its weapon was found in the forest several meters from the site, it seems that it was stopped with an EMP, it did not receive major mechanical damage, but its electronics are unrecoverable, however, the holographic storage unit is in perfect condition, so we will get all the information we were looking for from it," said the technician.
-Excellent, then the operation was successful," said the man and took a sip of his coffee. -Let them finish picking up what is missing and let's get out of this place, we have already wasted a lot of time here.
Twenty minutes later, the LAGUNA Industries ship would leave, leaving only the empty shell of the crashed transport ship to be devoured by the forest.
