Overthinking involves two basic elements- ruminating and worrying. We keep on playing our past activities in loop. We can’t control billions of neurons shooting in a particular direction to pave our ways towards doom. We keep on rehashing about our past deleterious engagements. We create stories in our head which start with “what if..”. There is a constant ledger in our head which we clear while talking to the bed pillow. Refreshing the tensive encounter with the memories which troubled us generally scares our soul.
I have a confession. I am a Virgo and a huge overthinker. In pursuit of making everything perfect, I plan my days in the head. Along with that, I analyze the gone days on what went wrong and how could it be better. I have devised some techniques myself which have significantly helped me. These are:
Set few minutes(10–15) aside per day to figure out your purpose of existence.Close your eyes, don’t move much and concentrate on bindu(a point between your eyelids). Gather the deepest questions in your head about why you are doing; what you are doing; what purpose does it serve.
Keep a writing pad handy. List all the things troubling you- the breakups, screwed career, lost friends, family problems, and other, point wise. In the next column, figure out what you can do about this. Is this really worth the amount of mental tension I am taking? Ask yourself these questions and list them. And tie those activities to a schedule.
Challenge those random neurons creating a ruckus in your brain. Deconstruct each thought. Ex: Why am I unable to find a suitable career.. is it because of my family situation. no? (then what).. no problems at all?.. then why are you still hanging there; get your ass up and hustle.
