In the book Outliers, Gladwell talks about a study that cites the 10,000 hour rule for mastery. The first study was conducted in 1993 in a Psychology research paper. Some studies since then have tried to debunk the theory, however in my opinion, it stands true. There can be a variance from 5,000 to even 12,500 hours. Just using logic, it's hardly believable that you can teach a Soccer player in 2-3 years how to become a master/professional playing for a professional team.
The same goes with our blogging or vlogging skills. If you're feeling impatient about the lack of attention or the lack of growth in your post, just continue to give it some time. You can't compare yourself to someone who's been in front of the camera for the past 10 years. Nor can you compare yourself someone who's been writing for 20. The skill sets need to be built and they need to be built over time with hours and hours of practice put in. I can't imagine my cousin (who just finished his IT course and learned how to program) can compete with someone who's been programming for 15 years. There's a level of mastery that comes with time and experience that you don't get in theory work or with the lack of hours put into making the millions of minute mistakes it takes to learn and grow.
The number really is just a symbol. It's a symbol of persistence. It's a symbol of not giving up. And it's a symbol of aiming higher and higher and taking the steps to get to the top.
Let me know your thoughts on the 10,000 mastery rule. Do you agree with it? Do you disagree with it? I'd love to know in the comments below!
