Do you go about your day with that creepy feeling that someone or something is always watching you? You have good reason to do so. Not only tracking human behavior and habits translate to big bucks it also keeps the public in check and in a constant state of anxiety and there's no shortage of entities that want to spy on you. From household items like the Amazon Alexa to all your phone records, a record of everything that you have said is somewhere to be mined and used, often to make someone else money. Many of the smart TV's record every conversation you have and they even admit it in their owners manual! Take the Samsung smart TV for example, their owners manual says “Please be aware that if your spoken words include personal or other sensitive information, that information will be among the data captured and transmitted to a third party." And as it turns out, that recorded information is handed over to the CIA! That revelation came out in the Wikileaks Vault 7 dump.
Okay, with all that said, what do you have to hide, right? Of course you're a law abiding citizen who pays their taxes so you have nothing to worry about. Well actually that's not true. Turns out people know when they are being looked at and spied on. In a study that found out visually impaired individuals can actually sense when someone is looking at them. The scientists found this out because the visually impaired subjects had their amygdala light up when hooked up to an MRI machine and that has huge implications on society as a whole.
The amygdala is considered our emotional center of our brain that often gives us our fear and anxiety. Have you ever noticed that if your boss is looking at you at work, it doesn't make you feel too good. You're more likely to screw up what you're doing because you're not focused on the task at hand because the stress associated with your boss's observation of you has you all flustered.
If we can sense all of the cameras and microphones that are constantly recording us inside and outside our homes which activates our amygdalas then there is no way society is acting as humanly functional as possible. The argument for mass spying isn't necessarily one of obtaining evidence for catching criminals, it is one of peace of mind.
If society has a constant underlying anxiety associated with being watched then the fruits of society will likely be malignant because the come from such a negative state and I think that's evident within our institutions that emphasize justice for grievances rather that individual freedom.
