Another Day in the Workshop: Deep Cleaning, Classic Consoles, and a Financial Setback at ReStory (Eng/Esp)

Hello everyone in the community! Welcome to another workday at my small restoration workshop, ReStory: Chill Electronics Repairs. Today was one of those varied days—shifting from meticulous, rewarding work to the kind of financial headache every electronics technician knows all too well. Grab a coffee, and let me walk you through how this repair shift unfolded.

We started the day with a rather pleasant job: a Nintendo DS handheld that was crying out for some urgent maintenance. After years of use, it had accumulated grime in all the seams and around the buttons. I proceeded to take it apart completely, carefully removing the casing, the circuit boards, and the screens. After cleaning each component with isopropyl alcohol and removing dust trapped in the hardest-to-reach corners, I decided to add a unique touch. I applied a fresh coat of paint to revitalize its exterior finish. Seeing the console reassembled—looking pristine and gleaming—was the best possible start to the day.

The next project on my workbench was a true giant of retro entertainment: an original, classic Xbox. Upon opening it, I encountered exactly what you’d expect from a console of this age: a massive buildup of lint and dust on the fans and the motherboard.

The process involved dismantling the metal chassis, removing the disc drive, and taking out the power supply unit to perform a deep clean. I washed the outer casing, cleared the grime from the circuit board, and put everything back together. It ended up looking spotless—ready to provide many more hours of gaming.

The third device on the list was a classic piece of mobile technology: a flip phone. While it had no major internal component failures, the hinge and the rubber keypad had accumulated a significant amount of grime over time.

I disassembled the casing using precision tools to avoid damaging the flex cables for the folding screen. After a thorough cleaning of the contacts and plastic components, the phone once again closed with that signature, crisp, and firm snap.

To wrap up the day, I managed to unlock the commercial license that allows me to accept BlackBerry phones at the repair shop. I was excited to work on one of these iconic pieces, but luck wasn't on my side: the first unit I received was completely destroyed.

After inspecting it and pricing out the spare parts needed to bring it back to life, the total far exceeded a reasonable budget. The parts cost too much—it simply wasn't worth the expense. I had no choice but to set the repair aside and wrap up the workday with a bittersweet feeling.

That’s life at the ReStory workshop! Sometimes you win by restoring gems from the past, and other times you’re faced with impossible budgets. Has it ever happened to you that the cost of a repair ends up being higher than the value of the item itself? See you in the next installment!
