The Corinth Canal turned out to be one of those places that are difficult to appreciate in advance. You can read about it, see photographs, know its dimensions — but none of that quite prepares you for the feeling of being there. On the one hand, it all makes perfect sense: people needed a shorter route between two seas, so they made one. On the other, standing there, you can’t quite shake the thought that this is an entire piece of land that someone simply decided to cut through. It sounds like a simple idea — make a passage where there wasn’t one before — but once you see the result for yourself, it doesn’t seem quite so simple anymore.

Corinth Canal, Greece.
