An Onward VR Story
Our squad is almost there. A few more blocks and we will be able to send the upload at the uplink at the address given to us by command. The AO is eerie, like a street I could have grown up on. The fighting in this area is ferocious, and I'm the one at the front with the shield. Then we get word that the Volk mercenaries are holed up in the house near the uplink. We split up, two on the left, two on the right. I'm on the right. We make our way around the right side of the house through the middle of two hedges. The sun bakes on our camo gear as we make our way towards an opening. A wide open street, perfect to get your head split open by a sniper in a window somewhere. I take out my shield and see a black suited Volk streak through the target house. And then... bullets, ricocheting off the shield. I panic, shooting my pistol, giving my squadmate covering fire as he gets to safety. But then... click, click. My clip is empty. How can I reload with this shield out. I don't dare put it away. Maybe if I can...just... pinch the magazine. Then, a pain tears through my left flank, another into my foot. I collapse, blackness seeping in. They got me
What actually happened
I figured I'd try the new riot shield this time. I don't get to use the pistol often enough and Suburbia seems like a good map to try it out on. So we load in, and get going. Two of us go right, and the other two go left around by the bus and hedge. I'm moving with someone behind me. I get fired on, so I duck into my shield and fire back. I'm a terrible shot, as I try to figure out what angle the game lets you shoot the pistol. Obviously it doesn't let you shoot if your hand is clipping through the shield. So I'm pretty much spraying a semi-automatic pistol. Then.. click. Shit, what now? Does it let you reload with the shield hand? I fumble around, dang, I guess no..bang! The same guy in the house across the street must have got an exposed part once I fumbled around with the shield. Next time I have to find real cover.
