In Aceh, few insects bear names derived from the native tongue. I noticed that only a few insect species are widely referred to in the local language. One of these is the Vespa tropica, locally known as the Gumoto, a wasp belonging to the family Vespidae.

Among stinging wasps, the Gumoto is one that is venomous. Its wings are copper-brown, and its abdomen is black with orange bands. The head and thorax are both blacks.

Like honey bees, this species of wasp typically inhabits massive colonies and builds sizable nests in the branches of towering trees.

The majority of insects in the order Hymenoptera, including Gumoto, are classified as pollinators since their primary sources of diet are pollen and nectar.
