I noticed this spider yesterday in the Saweuk Forest, North Aceh. I think this is Neoscona arabesca, commonly known as the Arabesque orbweaver. The characteristically large abdomen indicates that this is a female; I think it contains a lot of spider eggs. The pattern on the back of the abdomen is really interesting and very similar to Indonesian (Javanese) batik patterns. The front legs are always folded; this was a gesture that she was ready to attack whenever danger threatened. The Arabesque orbweaver is common in bushes. They do not build large spider webs like most orbweaver spider species.
