Last night, a sofa arrived at my office. It's the one I wrote about last month in my Sofa Saving post. I hadn't fully saved up yet, and originally, I was looking for a new sofa at a reasonable price, but then... I fell in love at first sight. It happens, right?

Let me share a bit about why I decided to buy the sofa a little earlier than planned. Last week, after a heated discussion with my partner, I ended up working overnight in my office, sleeping on a yoga mat and cushion. The next morning, I woke up feeling stiff all over, and deep down, I just knew I needed a sofa.

Before my daughter woke up, I headed home, saw her off, and then returned to the office to start my sofa hunt. On a second-hand marketplace, similar to eBay, I found this mid-20th century Danish style sofa. It has a wooden frame with six cushions, and the seat extends into a bed. The wooden frame and the easy-to-wash or replace covers were exactly what I wanted.

Buying a pricy item second-hand was a bit worrying, but after some research, I found that it was being sold by a vintage furniture shop in Leipzig, where I live now. The shop had articles on a local free paper's website and good reviews, so I decided to go for it. I thought it would also be nice to contribute to the local economy.

And finally, the sofa arrived last night! Getting it up to my second-floor office without an elevator was a struggle, but a kind person from the shop helped me out and we managed to get it there. I have now sore muscles today ...

Sitting alone on the sofa in my office, I felt an indescribable sense of accomplishment. For the past ten years since I moved Germany, I'd been leaning on my partner's support, feeling somewhat dependent and unsettled deep down. I was living by myself in Japan and Austria before Germany.

This year, I rented my own office and was able to place furniture of my choosing, and I felt a bit proud of myself. This sofa might symbolize a step towards my independence in Germany. I know it's a baby step but I'm really happy about it.

I'm looking forward to taking a nap on the sofa during my office workday next week.

Have a nice weekend!
