What kind of soil do you use for growing your plants?
When I first started gardening, I often chose budget friendly soil. But over time, I kept learning from experienced gardeners in books and videos say that โgood soil really matters.โ As I continued growing plants myself, I gradually began to understand why. Since then, Iโve mostly been buying proper gardening-brand soil for the last years.
This year, however, my thinking changed a little.
At one point, I completely ran out of soil and ended up buying some from a nearby supermarket. To my surprise, it worked better than I expected. Of course, compared to higher-quality soil, it had some drawbacks โ there were larger chunks of wood mixed in, and it dried out more quickly. But it was also much cheaper.
For plants like tomatoes or chili peppers, which need a long seedling period and spend quite a while growing indoors, I still think itโs worth using good soil. On the other hand, for plants that only stay in seed trays for a week or two before being transplanted into the garden or balcony containers, cheaper soil might actually be good enough.
Of course, soil quality is important. But Iโve started to think that choosing different soils depending on the plant and growing period is both practical and kinder to the wallet.
These are the kinds of things Iโve been thinking about this spring. Being flexible is important too!
