I recently ordered a set of cable knitting needles. It arrived yesterday. They are from my favorite series of wooden knitting needles. How beautiful they are!
These needles are special to me. They are the first knitting needles I bought as a tool for my work. Yes, this year knitting has become my work 🥳 🧶
Last fall I applied for an EU artist in residency program. My application was accepted and I will stay at an art university in Austria to work on my project. It was the place I did part of my PhD. research 10 years ago. My project is about making knitted objects with machine learning programs to implement randomness that is not easy for humans to create.
My hobbies become my work time by time. I liked computers, I studied computer science and informatics and programming turned be my job. Writing, which I have loved since the dawn of the Internet, became my job too. After I moved to Germany, cooking became my job. Gardening turned to be my work in last years. And now knitting too!
I am lucky that I can earn money from what I like and I can declare money paid for tools and materials as expenses. Once I read one of my favorite authors wrote.
If you say "If I do what I love as work, I won't love it anymore", then it's not what you really love.
I think he is right.
For the next step, I try to scale up my business such as making patterns that are sold without me working. Some day, I would like to write the process of turning hobbies to work for my daughter and others.
Anyway, I'm so happy that knitting becomes my work!

先日編み針を注文して、昨日届きました。大好きな木製の編み針のシリーズから出ているケーブル編み用の編み針です。
この編み針は実は私にとってちょっと特別なものです。仕事の道具として買った初めての編み針なのです。はい、編み物が仕事になりました。
去年の秋にEUの制作滞在プログラムに応募して、無事申請が通り、冬の終わりに以前お世話になっていたオーストリアの大学に1ヶ月ほど滞在して作品を作ります。申請したトピックは、コンピューターによる機械学習で人間が作りにくいランダムさをはらんだ編み物を作るというものです。
最終的には機械でにょろにょろ編み出したいのですが、最初は実験的に手を使って編むだろうということで、これまで適当にとじ針などで代用していたケーブル編みの針を購入しました。
大好きだったコンピューターが大学時代を経て仕事になり、インターネットの黎明期から好きだった書くことが仕事になり、ドイツに移って料理が仕事になり、この数年で子供の頃から好きだったガーデニングが仕事になり、編み物も仕事になるかな？
好きなことをしてお金をもらって、必要なものを経費で買えるのはうれしいし、めぐまれていると思います。
生活の糧はコンピューターと執筆の仕事で稼げていて、料理の仕事がお小遣いになっていますが、一通り趣味を仕事にした感じなので、次はスケールさせてお金を稼ぐ方に寄せても行きたいなと思います。
昔々就職活動をしていた頃に、村上龍さんがどこかで以下のように書いていたのを思い出します。
好きなことを仕事にすると好きじゃなくなるなんていうのは嘘で、それは本当は好きなことじゃないのではないか。
正しいと思います。楽しくなくなってしまうのは、多分仕事として人の言うことを聞きすぎてしまうからかもしれません。
もうちょっと考えがまとまったら趣味を仕事にすることについて、お金を稼いで生きていくってどういうことなのか、私の考えを子供に書き残したいこともあり、文章にまとめたいです。
