Feeling difficult in Gentrified Berlin / ベルリンのジェントリフィケーションに対する寂しさ

We spend our winter holidays in Berlin. We stay at a hotel, being lazy, and take walks.

We went out to the city center area called Mitte and I felt difficult by seeing ongoing gentrification. Gentrification started in Berlin long ago but somehow I could accept it.

But today the remodeled Tacheles, a building formerly squatted by artists, overwhelmed me. I missed dirty and messy but beautiful Berlin full of artists all of the sudden.

I found my favorite shop that designs and sells pullovers, cardigans and scarves made in Germany will close the shop. They couldn’t extend the contract.

French department store Lafayette in Berlin also closes in the end of the next year. It was a place I visit almost always when I visit Berlin. My friend Berliner brought me there when I visited Berlin for the first time in 2011.

This time I was happy to visit there with my daughter whose favorite teacher is from France. I had a French teacher in America when I was exactly her age and I liked her a lot. We bought cakes to eat at our hotel room.

My favorite organic farblich store closed recently. First they closed their store and then online store.

I know business is tough and nothing stays the same. But still I miss my favorite stores and feel difficult towards gentrification… 🥺

冬休みをベルリンで過ごしています。ホテルに泊まって、マスタリング・ライトニングネットワークを読みつつ、のんびりと散歩に出かけています。だらだらの境地で家に帰りたくないです。。

ミッテというベルリンの中心に出かけたら、ジェントリフィケーションが進んでいて圧倒されました。ベルリンでジェントリフィケーションが始まったのはずいぶん前のことで、まあそんなものかと東京育ちということもあり、そこまで気にしていなかったのですが、改装されたタヘレスを見て寂しい気持ちになりました。タヘレスはアーティストが占拠していたビルで、初めて訪れたときにはまだアーティストが制作をしていたんですよね。汚くてゴチャゴチャしていても美しくて、クリエイティビティにあふれていたベルリンが懐かしいです。

ドイツ製のセーターやカーディガン、スカーフをデザイン・販売しているお気に入りのお店が閉店することも買い物に行って知りました。お店の物件の契約を延長できなかったようです。素敵な紫のセーターを奮発して買って、お店のハガキを記念にもらいました。子供も😅

ベルリンにあるフランスのデパート、ラファイエットも来年末に閉店します。ベルリンを訪れると必ずと言っていいほど訪れる場所でした。2011年に初めてベルリンを訪れたとき、ベルリン在住の友人が連れてきてくれました。

子供と一緒に訪れることができてうれしかったです。というのも子供が大好きな先生がフランス出身だからです。私も子供と同じ年頃にアメリカでフランス人の先生に教わったことがあり、彼女がとても好きでした。ケーキを買ってきてホテルの部屋で食べました。

ほかにも大好きだったオーガニックの生地のお店が最近閉店しました。まず店舗を閉め、次にオンラインショップを閉めました。

ビジネスの世界が厳しいのはわかっているし、変わらないものもありません。でもやっぱり、お気に入りのお店がなくなるのは寂しいし、ジェントリフィケーションに対しては複雑な気持ちです。
