This year, I've become less resistant to cut flowers and started decorating my home with them.
Reflecting on why, I think it's partly because I've learned to compost dead plants and return them to the environment through gardening. Also, flowers I took from the community garden while I maintained them made me feel easy.
Recently, I've learned to have flowers at home from Marie Kondo's book on tidying. Though not explicitly stated in the book, I've come to appreciate and say goodbye to flowers, which has helped decrease my resistance to cut flowers.
Writing my personal history, I remembered that my beloved grandmother was a teacher of Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging. I too learned Ikebana in middle school. I realized I not only like growing plants but also arranging them.
Still, I feel a bit sad about cut flowers being taken from plants. Additionally, a documentary made me feel conflicted about cheap flowers sold in stores, some of which are imported from faraway places like Africa.
While I do buy flowers from supermarkets or chain stores, I try to choose those with a lower environmental impact to brighten my life.
Decorating with flowers is wonderful. Why not buy a flower and enjoy it over the weekend?
Have a nice weekend!
