One of my friend shared a proverb with me some days ago that inspire me. He said. "That which pursues you determines your speed." Some people are not pursued by any serious challenges and as such they can afford to cruise along the road of life. That is okay with them. For them life is a breeze and a smooth pleasure walk in the park.
Other pursued by a myriad of problems, of all shapes and sizes. Poverty is knocking on their door. Their family history has no record of any successes. History is threatening to repeat itself in their lives, and failure seems to be lurking in their corner. Such people have no choice but to run and run very fast.
This remained me when I was childhood that really underscores this principle. My friend and I had a habit of plucking a neighbour's ripe mangoes on a regular basis. Although the trip to pick the juicy, succulent mangoes was an adventurous childhood prank for us, it was a great irritation for the man who owned the mango tree in his house. We would always wait until neighbour went to work and then find our way into his compound and pick the fruits from the tree. We convinced ourselves that it was not stealing. We were only "acquiring" the mangoes.
One day, as we were happily gathering the mangoes, we heard an unexpected bark and soon a huge dog came running after us. The house had a thick hedge bordering it and I took off speeding towards a section of the hedge that must have been about six feet high. I was about 11years old then, and less than five feet tall. I has not jumped anything that was six feet high before, but what was running after me posed a clear and present danger.
I ran as if my very life depended on it; and it did! When I got to the six foot high hedge, I did not hesitate or slow down. I took a bold and audacious jump and sailed over to the other side where the barking dog could not get at me. Upon reflection, I guess it must have been a combination of fear and a severe rush of adrenalin that made me undertake the impossible, record breaking jump.
Well, I learnt a lesson that day: that which is running after you can inspire you to jump, run and do several other things that you never thought possible!
