Happy New Year Anime Realm Community, Thankfully we made it into the new year.
I didn鈥檛 expect to start the year watching an ice-skating anime, but here we are, Medalist quietly found its way into my watchlist, and before I knew it, I was genuinely invested, At first glance, it looks like one of those calm sports anime you put on just to pass time, Ice skating, a young girl chasing a dream, quiet atmosphere nothing that screams you must watch this now, And honestly, that鈥檚 exactly why it works.
The story follows Inori Yuitsuka, an 11-year-old girl who wants to become a figure skater, The problem is She鈥檚 shy, awkward, and started skating later than most kids who dream of going pro, In the skating world, starting late is almost like being told your dream already expired, People don鈥檛 say it directly, but you feel it in their silence, their doubt, and the way they lower expectations around her.
Then there鈥檚 Tsukasa Akeuraji, a former skater whose own dreams didn鈥檛 work out, He didn鈥檛 fail because he lacked talent life just didn鈥檛 align for him, Now he鈥檚 stuck in that space where you鈥檙e not completely bitter, but not fully healed either, Meeting Inori becomes a turning point for both of them, He sees himself in her, and instead of letting her fade out like he did, he decides to coach her.
What I really love about Medalist is that it doesn鈥檛 romanticize the journey, training is hard, the progress is slow, confidence doesn鈥檛 magically appear after one motivational speech, Inori struggles with her fear, with comparison, with the idea that she might never be good enough, and Tsukasa struggles too, trying not to project his own regrets onto her while still pushing her to go forward.
The skating scenes are beautiful, but what stands out really more is the emotions behind them, every performance indeed feels like a conversation between fear and then courage, between past failures and future hope, you know, you are not just watching someone skate, you are watching them confront themselves on the cold ice.
This anime also does a great job showing how competitive environments can quietly crush some people, other skaters are not evil, but the pressure is real, everyone is chasing medals, approval, and validation,some are confident, some are desperate, and some are already burning out at a young age, Medalist doesn鈥檛 judge them, it just shows how different people cope.
What makes this particular anime special is its softness, It鈥檚 not rowdy at all, there鈥檚 no dramatic screaming every episode. Instead, it uses silence, pauses, and small victories, when Inori finally lands a move she鈥檚 been failing at, it feels huge, and not because the anime tells you it is huge, but because you have watched her struggle to get there.
Tsukasa鈥檚 growth is just as important. Coaching Inori forces him to face the version of himself that gave up, Through her, he starts believing again not necessarily in medals, but in effort and purpose, Their bond feels natural, not forced, It鈥檚 built on trust, frustration, encouragement, and shared vulnerability.
By the end of the season, Medalist doesn鈥檛 try to wrap everything up neatly, Dreams are still far away, Doubts still exist, But there鈥檚 progress, and sometimes that鈥檚 enough, It reminds you that starting late doesn鈥檛 mean starting wrong.
Medalist is one of those anime that stays with you quietly, you don鈥檛 finish it hyped , you finish it thoughtful, It鈥檚 gentle, emotional, and deeply human, If you like character driven stories, slow growth, and anime that feels honest, this one is absolutely worth your time.
