विज्ञान भले ही पुनर्जन्म को संशय की नजर से देखे, लेकिन देहरादून के शुक्लापुर क्षेत्र के लोगों की इसमें अटूट आस्था है। इसके लिए उन्होंने आधार तलाशा पौधों में। मृत्यु के बाद पौधे के रूप में जीवन को सहेजने की यह विधा अनूठी है। प्रियजन के परलोक सिधारने पर अंतिम संस्कार के बाद परिजन श्मशान घाट में एक पौधा रोपते हैं और चिता की राख वहीं डाली जाती है। इन पौधों में लोग अपने प्रिय का अक्स देखते हुए उसकी देखभाल करते हैं। दिसंबर 2012 में शुरू हुई परंपरा के फलस्वरूप अब तक 53 लोग पेड़ों के तौर पर पुनर्जन्म के रूप में यहां मौजूद हैं। पर्यावरण संरक्षण के लिए वर्षों से काम कर रहे पद्मश्री डॉ. अनिल प्रकाश जोशी की इस अनूठी पहल का दायरा उत्तराखंड की सीमाओं से बाहर निकलकर बढ़ता जा रहा है।
