You use a great writer's device here. You make us like the characters, before you put them in danger. Once we are invested in the characters, emotionally, we are hooked. We want to know the mother and father are OK. We want the young pianist to survive, compose and play more music. When you hook readers like that, you have achieved something.
You are developing a knack for writing action stories that are interesting and hold our attention. I had fun reading this!
