His tremendous patience in the face of absolute adversity strips away every excuse the rest of us have to complain about our minor daily inconveniences.

I accompany my husband to all his appointments. He has been dealing with advanced cancer for three years. The physical struggle of patients in the waiting room is clear. Yet, I am struck often by the care my husband and others receive. Where do those doctors and nurses get their compassion? How are they not wearied by the stream of suffering they witness every day. I am stunned sometimes by the kindness that never seems to fail. I saw one doctor in the recovery room, after my husband had his last procedure. It was the end of the day. The doctor was weary. He went around to each patient and checked on the physical and emotional well-being. The nurse said the doctor does that every time, before he goes home. He checks on his patients. Amazing, day after day, year after year, he still has that commitment to heal and to care for others.

Thanks for your inspiring piece. It really hits home.
