My grandfather was a farmer, and farmers must read the weather. I learned from my brother, who was taught by my grandfather, to know the signs of coming rain. The air would feel different, the trees would rustle, but the telltale sign was the leaves. Whenever the leaves turned up, rain was surely coming.
Loved your story. It felt so real, and true, as I read.
Your love of nature (including ants) comes through.
