I think in my case it was a matter of personality. My mother (my only parent for most of my life) was very sociable. She loved going out among people. She craved company. It was hard for her when we lived in the country and she had no friends or family. I, on the other hand, was an introvert. Not like my mother at all. When we moved to the city it was a culture shock. Just so many people around. And then, we were quite poor. We tried to keep up appearances, but there were things we couldn't hide...like the fact that we lived in an attic.
It was hard for my mother to relate to the reality that I was self conscious. She tried.
Anyway, your picture said it. I wish I had the bold confidence of your figure. So much time wasted worrying about nonsense.
I love your art.
