In this present hardship everywhere in Nigeria, it's very important to save any farm where we can manage to get some food for ourselves and for family. I have watched and saw that one of the ways to survive the economic hardship we are facing in Nigeria is through farming of food and other fruit. I have taking farming upon myself because it's where I provide food from and sometimes I even make money by selling some fruits.

My banana farm have given me so much money this year and it has not stopped. Only this year, I have harvested a lot of banana from the small portion of land. Banana is a kind of fruit that I have not regretted planting because it's easy to plant, manage and also has a very long period of given birth to many more banana trees. I planted only three banana trees when I ventured into the plantation newly, but today, I have harvested more than seven times bunch of banana and still have more than 15 banana trees.

With good soil and enough land, a banana planter should expect that she'll continue to harvest banana till the rest of her life. As long as fire is not allowed to enter a banana farm, the growth will continue to be massive with many of the fruit in return.

What can banana do for family

I don't know for you if banana has contributed anything for your family because for me, it has done a lot.

Banana helps to soften my stomach if it's too heavy to accommodate food.

My children loves leaking banana because of its taste and they even enjoy it most sipping it with Garri.

I have made some money I was able to use and settle my children school fees.

My happiness with recent banana harvested and what I did to keep it safe

Some part of banana trees I planted are situated close to a flowing river. When one of the tree close to the river was developing a banana fruit, I was very scared because I know we are in a rainy season and the heaviness of the fruit may help the flowing river to flush it away.

As the fruit developed by a nearby flowing river banana tree kept growing and becomes heavy for the banana tree to carry, it almost fell down to the river side.

As I saw that the weight of the banana fruit was pooling it banana tree to the river side which may help the flowing river to flush away the banana tree and it's fruit. To avoid such, I have to look for a very big tree with a kind of big branch strong to lift the banana tree from bending into the flowing river.

Even after I used a big tree to assist my banana tree from falling inside the flowing river, I kept monitoring the banana tree to make sure water don't adjust the supportive tree.

For almost weeks there was no rain, I was thinking this year's rain has ceased but was not so. Only days ago, it has rained heavily for three days unstoppable. As it was raining I became very scarred that I may lose my banana fruit to flowing river.

immediately after three days that rain stopped, I rushed to my banana farm to see if there's hope for me to harvest my banana. The flowing river nearly brought down my banana tree and it's fruit. There's no way I'll waist such space anymore than to harvest the banana before rain will do it for me. I took a cutlass and then harvested the banana. The banana I harvested is very big and heavy.

En esta situación de penuria que se vive en Nigeria, es muy importante salvar cualquier explotación agrícola de la que podamos conseguir algo de comida para nosotros y para la familia. He observado y visto que una de las formas de sobrevivir a las dificultades económicas a las que nos enfrentamos en Nigeria es cultivando alimentos y otras frutas. Yo me he dedicado a la agricultura porque es de donde me proveo de alimentos y a veces incluso gano dinero vendiendo algunas frutas.

Mi granja de plátanos me ha dado mucho dinero este año y no ha parado. Sólo este año, he cosechado muchos plátanos de la pequeña porción de tierra. El plátano es un tipo de fruta que no me he arrepentido de plantar porque es fácil de plantar, manejar y además tiene un periodo muy largo de dar a luz a muchos más plataneros. Sólo planté tres plataneros cuando me aventuré en la plantación, pero hoy he cosechado más de siete racimos de plátanos y aún tengo más de 15 plataneros.

Con buena tierra y suficiente terreno, un plantador de plátanos debería esperar seguir cosechando plátanos hasta el resto de su vida. Mientras no se permita que el fuego entre en una finca bananera, el crecimiento continuara siendo masivo con muchas de las frutas a cambio.

Qué puede hacer el plátano por la familia

No sé si a ti el plátano te ha aportado algo a tu familia, pero a mí me ha aportado mucho.

El plátano me ayuda a ablandar el estómago si está demasiado pesado para acoger la comida.

A mis hijos les encanta filtrar plátano por su sabor e incluso lo disfrutan más tomándolo a sorbos con Garri.

Parte de los plataneros que planté están situados cerca de un río. Cuando uno de los árboles cercanos al río estaba desarrollando un plátano, me asusté mucho porque sabía que estábamos en una estación lluviosa y el peso del plátano podía ayudar a que el río lo arrastrara.

Como la fruta desarrollada por el plátano de un río cercano seguía creciendo y se volvía pesada para el plátano, casi se cae al río.

Como vi que el peso de la fruta del banano lo estaba llevando a la orilla del rio, esto podria ayudar a que el rio se llevara el banano y su fruta. Para evitar esto, tengo que buscar un arbol muy grande con una rama fuerte para levantar el banano y evitar que se doble en el rio.

Incluso despues de usar un gran arbol para ayudar a mi platanero a no caer dentro del rio que fluye, segui monitorizando el platanero para asegurarme de que el agua no ajustara el arbol de apoyo.

Durante casi semanas no ha llovido, pensaba que las lluvias de este año habian cesado pero no fue asi. Hace tan solo unos días, ha llovido copiosamente durante tres días imparables. Mientras llovia me asuste mucho de perder mi fruta de platano por la corriente del rio.

Inmediatamente después de tres días que la lluvia se detuvo, me apresuré a mi granja de plátanos para ver si hay esperanza para mí para cosechar mi plátano. La corriente del río casi derriba mi platanera y su fruta. No hay manera de que desperdicie más espacio que para cosechar el plátano antes de que la lluvia lo haga por mí. Cogí un alfanje y coseché el plátano. El plátano que coseché es muy grande y pesado.
