Childhood was one phase of life most adults would never trade for anything. The memories, the fear of not been scolded, the joy of little moments we counted as big and the last but not the least is the lies like threat to keep us away from bad habits our parents told us.
As a child and one from an African mother, my mum fed us with so many tales, experiences, great upbringings and the so-called lie-like-threat warning like I mentioned earlier and it stayed with me up till the day I realized it was not true
.
It all started that day when my mum cooked on of her very delicious meal and just so that nobody would go behind me to get the remains from the pot after we all had our shares, I quickly poured mine into the pot and was about eating when my mum came in.
The first point of contact I received was a hard hit on my skull, telling me it's a bad habit and that I will only implicate my babies in the future when I start giving birth because every part of my baby's body or the larger obvious part will be as black as the back of the pot, making it different from the normal skin complexion. Ehhhhh thank God for my life was my thought that very day.
I carried this in my head like it was my lifeline cos no matter how little I was, I knew I can't afford to birth a child with strange complexion. Even when I became an adult, I tried so hard not to be tempted to eat from the pot either a clean stainless one or black pot.
Not until one fateful day, my twin sister was pregnant and I stumbled on her eating from the pot. I screamed at her, telling her to never try such again until she told me that eating from the pot has been her cravings right from second trimester and she does it most of the time. "You're giving birth to a black and brown baby" was all I could shout worriedly because the words of my mum kept ringing in my head again and again.
BUT SHOCKINGLY, on the day of her delivery, my sister delivered a handsome baby boy with no spot let alone strange black body or face up till now and all I could say in my head was "mummyyyy see how far you deceived me from enjoying pot of food".
Apparently, most of those warnings are meant for us to behave well and in orderliness but it took me a very long time to validate it not to be true.
I'll be dropping my 🖊️ here on the 300th prompt of the Ladiesofhive community and I wish us a happy 6th year anniversary in advance 🎈
