He government said it should no longer be called a prison but henceforth shall be called a correctional center. Correcting means something had gone wrong, an error or mistake had occured, which definitely needs to either be erased or adjusted to have the corrected and right version.
Not all people can be law abiding citizens who would stay true to obeying the law and it's cause, and that is the main reason why there is the provision of law been made to curb any criminal activities of whatever level and weight which walk alongside it's correlating punishment according to the weight of crime.
Now, the question comes knocking. Should offenders be punished or rehabilitated when they commit a crime and sent to correctional centers? Which of these two should actually be the main focus when they arrive the centers?
In my own perspective, both are very important, necessary and should be the main focus when dealing with crimes. Let them be punished according to the gravity of their crimes so that they can know how hurtful it is for whom got hurt in the process of their unlawful act. Let them have a taste of what they did and let those who they committed it against feel the justice that was served right.
At the end of the day, it's not about the whole punishment but about curbing and eradicating crimes in our society. Someone committed a crime today and wasn't punished, definitely that's a room and an open letter of invitation to anyone who's interested and attracted by criminal activities to do accordingly. With these, what's the hope and gain of those who stick to obeying the law of the community, town, state, region and nation that they found themselves?
However, in the process of punishment, let them be rehabilitated. In the sense that, while making them realize their wrongs and the consequences that follows they should as well not become wasted by the time they are out and done with the punishment of what they did.
What is the usefulness when an offender got punished and could have no better way of life anymore because they once committed errors. They can get easily attracted to crimes again on getting their freedom back and mixing back with the society because it's the only easy and safe place or space to accept them for who they are even with no value added.
But when someone who's serving punishment and at the same time got the opportunity to learn and write, if learned before but do not have workable or digital skills get the privilege to learn and be good at it, or even vocational training of being an artisan in any desired skill, talents discovery for those who are good in sports, counselling and reorientation exercises, and many others. Only then is the purpose of the CORRECTIONAL CENTER fulfilled because whenever they are coming out, they are not coming out as the old person but as a new being.
They are corrected and not condemned, not for themselves alone but for the betterment of the society and even every law abiding citizens will feel free to report any crime case to the law enforcement officers because they are sure that on returning back, they will turn a good life.
In conclusion, let both rehabilitation and punishment be the main focus of the correctional service centers. Dual blessings are always the best.
