Looking at this point of conversation from the angle as someone who has once been an on-site HR and admin professional, it's kind of hard to really know what to say.
So many workers are actually striving so hard to remain stable mentally at their various workplaces just so that their source of income can be intact and not because they are stable enough to continue. Some mental stress to some employees may be caused by their personal life challenges of which most management of organizations do not feel bothered about or concerned about because mental health doesn't affect salaries at the end of the month.
Funny enough these mental stress may be caused by these same workplace actually due to the cultural practices and workforce in general but then employees are still expected to show up without complaining with smile radiating their faces.
The truth is that it is not bad if there can be mental health leave period or holidays for workers. Periods they can wait for to reboot their system, refresh their strength even if there won't be private leave from work.
We know there will be people who would use this privilege rightly and there are some who would misuse the opportunity.
I've seen people reframe the long time incident of losing a parent or family member, making it a new incident of a story that just happened just to take leave from work. Like, from the images of being hospitalized, till the point of death were retracted to prove her situation to be so serious that she even got some money from the management to support the burial process, lol. So how would such a person not fake mental stress just to have their way if mental leave privileges are stamped to take place.
My issue or concern is not even about taking the off but when you get caught, it stands in the way of people who really need it and they tend to provide unnecessary proof just so that the organization is not approving what's not supposed to be approved.
Being in the middle and thinking on behalf of both parties, they both are worthy of their requests. Workers should get time off to cool their heads and employers are entitled to make sure their businesses are running well with no excuses left and right but the sad part about this whole issue is just that if employees are denied these little privileges because some might misuse the opportunities, if eventually something bad happens to the employee, organization would fill in the vacant position with no hesitation because that is the right thing to do.
Having mental health leave from work should be something feasible or better still be declared as a general public holiday for probably a full day or two so it can be generally recognized and practiced by both private and public organizations.
Mental health is very paramount in whatever humans would do no matter how less demanding it can be and that's the more reason why organizations or employers should consider it and not shun it because of the so called weeds amongst plants.
