It is meant to poke you right in the emotions and cause you to be outraged.

Police and firefighters do have good benefits, and while the story sounds awful as it is meant to.. there have been Millions of dollars raised for first responders, and survivors from multiple organizations. For this I am glad, they deserve it.

The political games are just that though.
