El nacimiento de esta perfecta creación se remonta a cuando los holandeses emigraron a América y se llevaron consigo varias tradiciones. Una de esas tradiciones fue el famoso olykoeks, oil cake en inglés. Estos eran unos bollos de masa que freían en aceite y se usaban para acompañar a los alimentos principales.

Según la Food Reference las donas comenzaron a prepararse de manera masiva en 1934 cuando un inmigrante ruso presentó la primera máquina para hacer donas de manera automática en una feria de Chicago, de allí en adelante se ha convertido en un producto comercial y delicioso.

Add milk, yeast, egg, sugar, wheat flour, salt and butter to the bowl.
Knead for 7 minutes until a smooth and homogeneous dough is obtained.
Let the dough rest in a bowl and covered with plastic wrap for at least an hour.
Spread flour on the counter and with the help of a rolling pin stretch the dough. It should be about 6 or 7 mm thick.
Cut the dough to the desired size and with the help of a smaller cutter open a hole in the middle of the circle.
Put the cut dough on a piece of paper to prevent the donuts from sticking to the counter.
Cover the donuts with plastic to prevent them from drying out and wait for them to rise. Let stand for at least 40 minutes.
Once the dough has risen, fry the donuts. The oil must be at medium temperature so as not to burn the donuts.
Drain the donuts, so they don't have excess fat.
Prepare the glaze by adding the icing sugar and water in a cup, add the coloring and mix. You can add any color food coloring you like.
Dip donut in glaze, just cover half. Add rain of colors if we wish and let the glaze dry.
