Nearly 4,000 BTC — worth around $320 million — was drained from the Liquid Network's federation wallet on September 6.
Then came the strange part.
The people behind the attack claimed to be “white-hat” hackers and told Liquid to fix the vulnerability before they would return the Bitcoin.
And apparently, they weren't bluffing.
Liquid later received 3,400 BTC, worth roughly $262.6 million. About 598 BTC, or around $47 million, remained outstanding.
The attack affected Liquid, a Bitcoin sidechain developed by Blockstream. The Bitcoin base layer itself wasn't hacked. Reports indicate the exploit involved a vulnerability in the underlying Elements software and the peg-out process.
“Please fix the bug first. The chain is under risk at latest commit right now.”
That's the message the alleged hackers left while holding hundreds of millions of dollars.
Now, here is the thing: calling yourself a white hat doesn't magically make stealing $320 million okay.
I've seen this kind of security irony before. Back in 2021, I spent hours dealing with security alerts that looked harmless simply because there were so many of them. Eventually, the biggest problem wasn't the missing warning.
It was that people had become comfortable ignoring warnings.
Security tools can make you feel safe right up until the moment you actually need them.
And crypto has a particularly brutal way of teaching that lesson.
Liquid has since returned to the recovery and security-work phase, while the remaining funds and the full details of the exploit remain under investigation.
Getting 3,400 BTC back is obviously good news.
But let's be honest — when someone can walk away with nearly $320 million and then send you instructions on how to fix your own security, something went seriously wrong.
This isn't really a happy ending.
It's a $320 million security lesson with roughly $47 million still sitting in the footnotes.
