Once again, we have another elite Oilers defender from the 60's! Also, once again, a defender from the Oilers AFL Championship teams! It must have been really difficult to pass against Tony Banfield and Mark Johnston back in the day!
Tony Banfield was a cornerback for the Houston Oilers for five seasons. From 1960-1963, and then in 1965. Tony was one of, if not the best corner of his time for three seasons in a row! He was First-Team All-Pro and a Pro Bowler from 1961-1963. He averaged 7 interceptions a season during that three year stretch.
Banfield finished his career after the 1965 season after playing in 67 games, with 61 starts. He finished his career with 27 interceptions. His longest return was 58 yards. Even though they didn't keep track of tackling stats back then, he's credited with a single career sack which is kind of funny.
This is some fantastic old footage of Banfield from the Titans' team YouTube page.
