Yesterday I posted an idea about how to improve the NFL schedule. Fellow Bears fan cherokee4life@cherokee4life chimed in with a really good Bears question.

Name, why in the Hell do the Bears keep trotting out the dumpster fire that is cornerback Jaylon Johnson?

Jaylon Johnson wasn't always terrible. In fact he used to be great. There was a time where Johnson was not only the best player on the team but the best player on the team. Johnson began his career as another example of a really good second round pick by the bears, He was picked in the second round (50th overall) of the 2020 draft. In his rookie season, Johnson played 13 games and defended an astronomical 15 passes. So he seemed to be the real deal from the jump. He continued to improve to the point where he made back to back Pro Bowls in 2023 and 2024. In summary, he was young and awesome!

The scouting report on Johnson according to CBS sports includes:

  • Man-to-man coverage: Comfortable mirroring receivers downfield and staying in phase with routes.
  • Ball skills: Has demonstrated the ability to read the quarterback, break on throws and convert coverage opportunities into interceptions.
  • Physical style: Plays confidently at the line of scrimmage and uses his length and contact to disrupt releases.
  • Zone awareness: Shows the ability to read the quarterback and receivers, recognize route combinations and close throwing windows.
  • Composure: His controlled footwork and ability to maintain positioning were highlighted

After those amazing seasons, the Bears signed him to a four year $76 million contract. That was actually a bargain for a young, excellent corner back.

And then the wheels fell off (nearly literally). In 2025, during off-season workouts, Johnson pulled his groin (phrasing!) He then aggravated it early in the season and underwent core muscle surgery. He appeared in only seven regular-season games and was on injured reserve twice. When he returned for the playoffs, he looked slow. really slow.

Many Bears fans were hopeful that after a healthy off-season, Johnson would return to his pro-bowl form. needless to say, that has not happened. Anyone with eyes can see that Johnson is washed. He already was not very fast so him losing any speed at all is devastating. He also does not have great size. Considering how thin the Bears are at Safety, perhaps a move there would make sense... if he could freaking tackle... which he can't. So after injuries, the bears are left with an undersized, slow, cornerback who can't tackle.

If Johnson is washed, why do the Bears still play him?

  1. They are insanely thin at cornerback. Even as bad as he is, he still might be the best cornerback on the team.

  2. He's the second highest paid player on the entire team. It is tough to bench a $24 million player.

  3. The Bears have to hope that playing time makes him better. Good luck with that.
