Solitude. How many people nowadays ever get to experience true solitude? Very few.
It is a concept that was commonly experienced by our ancestors the world over. Whether it be in the thick jungles of South America, the vast deserts of Australia or in the incredibly extensive Sarangeti plains of Africa, there was no shortage of spaces to get totally lost in.

Likewise in Europe and Asia, there are epic mountain wildernesses where one can truly achieve pure solitude, even today. One of such places is the Brecon Beacons range of mountains in South Wales.

If you dare turn off, or better still, leave behind your mobile devices, personal music players, and so on, solitude is yours for the taking. Of course the range is awash with tourists and adventurers, but it is so vast that you can tread paths that are people-free, even in the busy summer time. If you really want the place to yourself, then try visiting in the winter months - then it’s you, mountain goats and terrible weather. Or, maybe one or two hardcore members of the British military undertaking endurance training in the mountain range.
