Hello #HomeSolutions friends, have you ever thought about how much water we waste every day without really realizing it? Today I would like to talk to you about the importance of caring and saving water at home and share with you some simple ways to take care of it, because as we all know, fresh water is a limited resource, and as the population grows, it becomes even more valuable. Saving water is not only good for our pocketbook, but also for the environment. By making small changes in the way we use water in our homes, we are helping to protect our planet.

Mexico is a country with many water problems, water stress (more water demand than available) is quite high due to the presence of many industries and the lack of ecological education of the population. Last year there was even a city that completely exhausted this vital liquid due to overexploitation, this was a wake-up call. While part of the responsibility falls on the shoulders of the companies that waste water, part of it falls on the shoulders of the population, so it is necessary that we take action in our homes to stop wasting something so important. At home, we have taken several small actions to contribute with our small grain of sand to the conservation of this precious liquid.
One of the basic pillars of saving and in turn of ecology is to reuse. With water there is little room to reuse it without losing a little comfort, however, what we managed to do at home was to save on one of the household activities that wastes the most water: washing clothes. Have you ever filled a washing machine with buckets or buckets? My washing machine doesn't have a hot water connection, so when it's my turn to clean it, we have to fill it manually, and it's surprising how many buckets we have to carry. It takes a lot of water to run it, and what happens to that water after washing? It just goes down the drain.
What we have implemented at home is to collect the rinse water. While the wash water comes full of soap and is usually a bit dirty, the rinse water is a different story and can be reused for certain things. We do this by collecting the rinse water in a tank next to the washing machine, we simply extend the hose from the washing machine to the tank just when the rinse is about to finish and start the spin. That water is used to wash the yard, wash the car and even to water the plants, although for the latter it is very important to use a biodegradable detergent. Of course, not everyone has a tank like mine next to the washing machine, however, it is possible to adapt a large container (like the one in the picture) to collect even a part of it so that not all of it goes down the drain.
Two critical activities in the home that waste a lot of water are showering and washing dishes, the easiest option to save water in this is simply to keep the faucet turned off as long as possible. Even when washing dishes, I like to have a pitcher nearby to collect water while I am rinsing some of them and use that water to rinse others. As for the shower, baths have become shorter and shorter and the tub has become a luxury and is only filled when Leo is sick.
However, the way we have been able to save even more on these activities is by replacing the showerheads in both the shower and the kitchen faucet with low-flow faucets, known as water savers. What these pieces do is mix air with water, which creates a feeling of pressure while using less water, this type of faucet can save as much as 50% water. Yes, it is an investment, however, it is completely worth it, because it also makes those activities much more comfortable.
We still have some changes to make at home to continue saving, we want to change the mechanism of the toilet for a more economical one, the one we have now is economical, but we want the one with two buttons, one for liquids that flushes less water and one for solids that flushes completely. We also want to change the sink faucet for a water-saving one, although this will be one of the last changes we will make, since we want to install a completely new cabinet, which requires a larger investment and the intervention of a plumber.
How do you save water at home?
