Having a first aid kit is normal for a mother. I have no choice about that. If that is not available then there will always be casualties that can't be handled properly.

Growing up I never had any opportunity of using any first aid kit and even to provide a first aid treatment for anyone. That happened because I am my mother's last child. I never saw her treat any little child, so that left me with no experience with that. Maybe that is why I had to make so many mistakes while raising my kids especially when it comes to providing first aid treatment to them.

After I got married and my first child came, I started learning everything all by myself. I did not know which first aid treatment to give for anything at all. I was always running to one or two persons to help show me what to do. This continued with my first child and it wasn't a very good experience for me. I had to learn the hard way. But by the time I had my second child, it happened that the second pregnancy brother twins forth. So, this time I have already gathered enough experiences from the numerous mistakes that I have made with my first child. I became a doctor to my kids. I started by knowing most of the drugs that I need to have at home Incase of any emergency. My knowledge of drugs grow to the extent that most of the people living with me always run to me when they are sick because I know the right drugs for any situation that occurs. That was the beginning of the journey for me.

This continued and it got to a point that I hardly take these kids to the hospital unless the situation gets out of hand for me. That is when they will be taken to the doctor or hospital for proper treatment. I use to have my first aid kit at home with different drugs for minor treatment before the arrival of a doctor. At first I spent lots of money purchasing those drugs and I know that it worth it. I know that most doctors advice against us treating ourselves at home. But that was the little help that I offer because most times you will notice that there was no money to be given to the hospital for treatment. Though what I do is to make sure I watch the person and if he or she is not improving, then the next thing is to take the person to the hospital and allow medical practitioners to check on the person and commence treatment immediately.

HOW BAD WAS THE INJURY?
Well for kids sometimes their injury comes very bad. I remember one night that my first male child hit his legs at the door to the entrance of our living room while playing and it was so bad that I had to apply the first aid at home before we took him to the hospital for further treatment. He was treated but it took time before the wounds got healed because he had a major cut in his legs. That was the biggest one I have experience since my kids started growing. But thank God he recovered and the leg became fine.

WHAT DID THAT EXPERIENCE TEACH ME?
It made me stronger. I know that I am a strong woman, but for that day, seeing all that happened and how he was badly injured, after every thing I learnt more how to apply the first aid and my heart became stronger because I saw blood gushing out and I hardly see things like that.

In conclusion, every family needs a first aid kit for the well being of the children.
