It had been in the air for some time and today it was finally decided:
This year's festival (Munich Oktoberfest) was cancelled due to the Corona Virus! A shock for the many Wiesn visitors from all over the world, but in the end the most rational decision.
This festival with more than 7 million visitors per year would have become the center for an even faster spreading of the virus.
It is not the first time that the already 210 years old folk festival had to be cancelled:
In 1813, due to the battles with Napoleon.
1854 and 1873: due to the cholera epidemic (almost 7000 people died of this virus)
1866: because of the Prussian-Austrian war
between 1914 and 1918: as a result of the First World War
Also during the 2nd world war there were no Wiesn
It was only after 1949 that the world's largest public festival was held again without interruption until the last year 2019.
I was never a big fan of the Wiesn. Only rarely did I visit it, although I am born in Munich and it is almost obligatory to go there every year to have fun with friends.
The pictures in this post are from 2010, unfortunately I could not find more recent pictures! So you can guess very well how much I miss the Wiesn! :-)
Nevertheless . . . enjoy the pictures!
Es lag schon seit einiger Zeit in der Luft und heute wurde es endgültig entschieden:
Die diesjährige Wiesn (Münchner Oktoberfest) wurde wegen des Corona Virus abgesagt! Ein Schock für die vielen Wiesn-Besucher aus aller Welt, aber letztendlich die vernünftigste Entscheidung.
Dieses Festival mit jährlich mehr als 7 Millionen Besuchern wäre der Knotenpunkt für eine noch schnellere Verbreitung des Virus geworden.
Es ist nicht das erste Mal, dass das bereits 210 Jahre alte Volksfest abgesagt werden musste:
1813: aufgrund der Kämpfe mit Napoleon
1854 und 1873: aufgrund der Cholera Epidemie (es starben fast 7000 Menschen an diesem Virus)
1866: wegen des preußisch-österreichischen Krieges
zwischen 1914 und 1918: wegen des 1. Weltkrieges
Auch während des 2. Weltkrieges gab es keine Wiesn
Erst nach 1949 gab es bis zum letzten Jahr 2019 ununterbrochen wieder das weltgrößte Volksfest.
Ich war nie ein großer Fan der Wiesn. Nur selten besuchte ich sie, obwohl ich in München geboren bin und es ja schon fast Pflicht ist, sich dort jedes Jahr mit Freunden treffen und zu vergnügen.
Die Bilder aus diesem Post sind aus dem Jahr 2010! Aktuellere Bilder konnte ich leider nicht finden. Ihr könnt deshalb sehr gut erahnen, wie sehr ich die Wiesn vermisse! :-)
Dennoch . . . viel Spaß mit den Bildern!
