With the participation in @rutablockchain's initiative, "My emotions in Hive", another topic related to emotions came up in my mind. We tend to see emotions as states that just happen and we feel: joy, sadness, love, anger, etc. We tend to think of emotions as states that simply exist and we can't control, as something secondary in everyday life, or perhaps something that doesn't matter much.
We know that emotions are hereditary from our ancestors, when we lived in nature, on a par with other animals. They are a biological mechanism that evolved in order to survive and adapt to the external environment. You see a tiger, you feel fear, you run. You see a fruit, you feel the desire to eat it, you take it. So, these physiological reactions to the external environment served us for millions of years.
Thus, we can assume that those who did not feel so much fear of the tiger had two fates: either they were devoured, or they somehow faced the tiger and managed to survive. The emotional mechanism of the one who survived was transmitted from generation to generation, so perhaps that is why today some are more likely than others to take risks to do certain things.
This "emotional mechanism" helped us to survive in nature, just as it does with animals today, especially mammals. But this mechanism did not evolve for life in modern civilization. Although our emotions are perhaps a bit more sophisticated than those of animals, we are still not born with a fully formed emotional system to be effective in modern life. Some training is necessary, and we all know the effect a difficult childhood can have on a person's life.
What came first, emotions or civilization? It is evident that the emotions came first, therefore, the human being was formed by his emotions, we are a product of emotion. The focus should be: give our emotions the conditions to develop effectively and healthily, and not seek to forcefully adapt or restrict them to conform to what we consider "right".
Returning to the point, it is evident that the emotional mechanism that worked very well in nature will not work as effectively in modern life. That is why children require a stable family and some education, unlike many animals that acquire independence very quickly. But what I mean is that the fear that made you run from the tiger is of little use if that "tiger" is an economic crisis, illness, a new project, etc.
I am not referring to eliminating fear or any uncomfortable emotion, as they are a natural part of us and we must accept them. It is inevitable to feel fear, anger, anxiety, etc., because that makes us human. But they are emotions that serve to make us run from the tiger, from something that can physically harm us or another person, not so much for problems of modern life.
Similarly, getting angry with a person who does not have the same point of view as yours is not very different from when a group of monkeys fight with another over territory, or when a couple of cats fight with each other. In this sense, the emotional mechanism between humans and these animals is not so different. Maybe the human fights in a more "sophisticated" way, he does it verbally, but the anger is there.
But there is a substantial difference between humans and animals: intellect.
Human beings have the capacity to "get out" of their programming, to be more conscious. We know that a paper tiger does no harm, because we know it. A cat will be frightened at the sight of it. The perception is what makes us know, to be certain of things, to transcend animal instinct. In animals, emotions are left to the external, there is little intellect, or it is very primitive. In the human being, the intellect can rule over emotion, through perception.
This does not make us "illuminated beings" or machines, but perhaps it does make us less animals. Giving "maturity" or greater "intelligence" to emotion is something that each person can seek on his or her own. So it is not about eliminating negative emotions, but building a channel for them, channeling them into something that adds value. But there are situations in which emotional conflict can affect us physically and mentally and this depends largely on perception. Change the perception and it feels different.
In this way, we can say that emotion is present in everything we do, or at least, it is a very important part. It is what makes us move, and makes us adapt to the environment we are in. It is what shapes our environment, and not just different things we feel spontaneously. Uncontrolled emotions make us feel that the external controls us. In the face of a crisis, fight or flight, emotion is free to be guided either by our primitive instinct or by whatever is viral at the moment. A higher perception is needed, from the intellect, to unblock the capacity to create, to take advantage of, or make better use of emotion, without being affected by external factors or crisis.
For me, the best concept of emotion is: E-Motion, that is:
Energy in motion.

In conclusion, I think that from the evolutionary point of view it is impossible to control emotions because that makes us human. But from the point of view of modern life, I think it is possible to somehow control emotions through the intellect. The concept of "emotional intelligence" is not very scientifically accepted, so perhaps it makes more sense to say: give "intelligence" to emotion.
