While all gamers instantly clicked on this clickbait title, I thought it was a good comparison to Twitter's or X's new ad revenue sharing model.
If you haven't heard about it in the past, Twitter basically made it public that verified users, aka. those paying for the $8 monthly subscription can now earn money for the views they receive on their tweets although the requirements were kind of high. As far as I remember you needed 10k followers and about 15 million impressions in the last 3 months to qualify for claiming your ad revenue share.
Now they changed those requirements but added a small but important asterisk to the update, it being that only impressions from other verified users would count towards this.
Can't say anything else than lol about this update as it's pretty much worse than the previous one since that one didn't have this requirement. I'm not someone really affected by this, after a month of Twitter Blue verification I decided to not pay for it any longer cause I knew I wasn't going to be able to "grind" Twitter daily for the impressions and reach of my Hive related tweets so it felt like a waste. At the same time I was also sure that I didn't qualify for the ad revenue share since I don't have 10k followers nor am I really that focused on increasing my numbers on Twitter where my account could at any time for any reason be deleted, shadowbanned, etc.
Anyway, let's think about this for a minute. Although I understand their concern is that scammers and abusers would game the viewcounts in their favor, the current requirement pretty much removes a majority of views from calculation. Doesn't help that Twitter doesn't even show metrics of "verified" impressions, most likely cause they're so low it's going to disincentivize a ton of "content creators" if you wanna call them that. In the same go this is going to remove a ton of legitimate viewcounts from non-paying users and those without even any accounts that get to tweets from diverse links all over the internet.
For Twitter this is of course a win-win because for one they don't have to share as much adrevenue to their users which they instead keep for themselves and in the same go they hope that this will get all the content creators to encourage others to start paying for Twitter verification. It's as if they know their earning content creators are desperate enough to not just be okay with these changes after they were initially lured with the previous higher pay model, now they're stuck and they don't have any other means of improving this in other ways than getting their viewers to subscribe to them directly or start tipping, etc, which I expect will come next if they start their own "coin".
These restrictions and nerf to ad share revenue aside I for one am happy as to how things work here on Hive. Where people can for a small sum of 3 hive, although still get an account for free from many places (
We saw the news some time ago where Twitch (owned by Amazong) randomly started taking more adrevenue share from their content creators without them being able to say much about it which in turn gave some more attention to other platforms such as Kick.com who proposed only taking a small fraction of adrevenue from its content creators. At what point are users and content creators going to realize that they're just going to keep spreading themselves thing either sticking to one platform and having to be okay with their changes or to keep jumping ship losing followers and supporters along the way? Instead of getting hold of their immutable account and demanding the platforms allow them to operate through it rather than their own centralized accounts fully in the platforms control. Hopefully in the near future.
