Welcome to a new series of posts by me, type swapped pokemon!
In this series i will be taking classic pokemon and changing their type — creating a new, fresh look. I am going to start with the original 3 starter pokemon: Bulbasaur, Charmander & Squirtle. From there i’m not sure which route i will take.
Todays pokemon is Bulbsaur, i have chosen to draw it as a Water type.
Original Sketches
I decided i would remove Bulbasaur’s ears and ‘bulb’ to make him fit in with Water typing. I replaced the ‘bulb’ with a fin but couldn’t decide which one to choose. I added some gills so it could breathe under water.
More Detail & Outline
I was originally going to leave Bulbasaur’s patches off, but i felt like they were needed so i added them on and made them a bit more round. I then i drew the outline to clean up the drawing.
Colour
Next was colour, i had already pre-selected my colour palette. I played around with the colours and had to choose between those two above. In the end i think i made the right choice.
More Detail & Background
I added the shadows and highlights, but felt something was still missing. To complete the piece i ended up adding a short, stumpy tail. This completed the Bulbasaur and i was now happy with how it looked.
I then added the background. I struggled with this part, i wanted to keep it simple and in the cartoon theme. I settled with placing Bulbasaur on a rock with water surrounding it. I am working on improving my backgrounds and hopefully throughout this series there is a noticeable improvement.
