I've been on Hive for about four years now. My beginnings were very humble, and I made all kinds of mistakes. Today I'm a Dolphin, about halfway to becoming an Orca, and I want to share a few tips that could help any newbie on the Hive blockchain.
I not only create content (short posts, podcasts, etc.), but I also read, comment and vote on posts from people I respect on Hive and from a good number of new Hivers. I do that because I know how hard it is to grow your audience and your account. I love seeing new faces and new voices, but I've noticed a few things that discourage me from reading and voting for their content.
DISCLAIMER: I'm not the big boss of Hive, and this isn't the one and only way to do it. These are just things I've learned along the way, often the hard way. If you see it differently, I'd love to hear it in the comments, a healthy and respectful discussion is always welcome, because I'm still learning too.
Let Your Own Voice Come Through
Que se escuche tu propia voz
People on Hive want to read you, your stories, your thoughts and your way of seeing the world, even if your post is short and simple. When a text sounds like it could have been written by anyone about anything, readers move on. I know I do.
I know this part might be a little controversial for many, because AI is spreading like wildfire through dry brush and evolving every day, and we're all still figuring out how to deal with it. I have nothing against using tools to help you create your content, and there are many of them. If you use them and think it's appropriate to mention it, then do, I think it's simply honest. My advice is just this, be smart, be honest, put in the effort and let it be your work, even if it's small. But that's a topic for another post.
Less Can Be More
Menos puede ser más
I might step on some toes with this one, but remember it's not my intention to attack or look down on anyone. The thing is, I see some content creators posting several times a day in different communities, and honestly, number one, it makes me wonder how so much content can be created so quickly. Number two, it can be tiring for your audience to be flooded with two or three posts a day. I'm a firm believer that one good post a day, or even a few a week, well researched, written and formatted, will probably draw more readers and more engagement than many rushed ones. Which brings me to my next point.
Make It Easy to Read
Que sea fácil de leer
Please take the time to make your posts easy and pleasant to read. Long blocks of unformatted text with a picture dropped in the middle are hard on the eyes. Short paragraphs, a few headings and well placed images with proper credits underneath make a big difference, and readers will stay with you longer.
Think Twice About What You Share
Piénsalo dos veces antes de compartir
Bear in mind that everything we post on the blockchain stays there forever, it can't be deleted. That's why I never post pictures of children I don't know or whose parents haven't given their consent. Even with your own family, it's worth asking yourself whether you want those faces and that personal information to be public for the rest of their lives.
Give Credit Where Credit is Due
Dale crédito a quien lo merece
Not every image you find on the internet is free to use. Many are protected by copyright or are sold on stock photo sites, and using them without permission can get you into trouble. A safer way is to use your own photos, or images from sources like Pixabay, Pexels, Unsplash or Wikimedia Commons, which offer pictures you can use for free. Just remember to give proper credit to the author and add a direct link to the page where you found the image. If you create an image with AI, say which AI you used. It's a small gesture, but it respects other creators and protects you.
You don't have to figure it out alone
No tienes que resolverlo todo solo
When I started, @theterminal community and its Discord helped me enormously. People answered my technical questions, explained how the chain works and showed me what is appreciated here and what is not. The same goes for the Town Square community (
@ecency), they're just great people. Join a community like that and ask your questions, you'll find good people willing to help.
