This tortoise can be easily distinguished by its lower jaw which is more rounded than the more squares of pseudemys. The back toes are connected by membranes like ducks because they are aquatic animals. to differentiate sex, males have longer claws on their front legs. whereas the female cloaca is closer to its shell than the male.
