驴Cu谩l es su origen?
It's not Ice Hockey: it's Underwater Hockey
When we hear the word Hockey, the first image that comes to mind is that of ice hockey, but there are other variations. Some of them are: field hockey, roller hockey, street hockey with a ball on the ground, among others.
But today I want to introduce you to an even less known modality, and that is Underwater Hockey.
What is its origin?
Unlike ice hockey, which originated in Canada in 1875, it took 75 years until the 1950s for the British Navy to think of improving the performance of its divers through this game. In this way, they improved the mobility and freediving time of the military personnel dedicated to this discipline.
With time, its practice reached Australia, United States, Canada and eventually spread to other countries.
Aspects of importance:
They compete in a pool area of 25 by 15 meters, and from 2 to 4 meters deep.
Playing time: 33 minutes, with 2 periods of 15 minutes and 3 minutes rest.
The complete team consists of 10 to 12 players. But the confrontation takes place between 6 athletes for each team. The rest are placed as substitutes at the edge of the pool.
The puck is passed between the players and, if thrown hard, can reach more than 3 meters away.
The teams are placed at each end of the pool, at the sound of the referee's whistle, they quickly dive in apnea, to maneuver and see who reaches the disc, which is in the center and at the bottom of the pool.
On each side, there is a 3-meter goal. The object of the game is for each team member to try to get the puck into the opposing team's goal zone to score points and win by the highest score.
The configuration of each team consists of 3 forwards and 3 defenders, placed in various positions.
You can swim on the surface in freestyle, avoiding getting hit by other athletes.
Puck, stick and athlete's equipment:
The puck is made of lead, has an average weight of 1.3 to 1.5 kg and is plastic coated so as not to mark and damage the pool floor.
The stick is very short in its design, made of wood, with positive horizontal buoyancy. This provides less resistance in the water and less fatigue on the athlete's hands and wrist. At the same time, its color must be differentiated by teams. Example: white and black sticks.
Athletes wear numbered hats and swimsuits that are the same color for each team, medium-sized fins, short snorkel, freediving mask with little volume, and latex gloves for a better grip of the baton and hand protection.
No obstruction or escorting between players is allowed.
The puck must not be held in the hand, or carried on top of the stick. Nor may it be held by anything other than the stick.
To finish the post, remember that you must have a medical team that guarantees a previous check-up to each competitor, and attend any accident that may occur.
