Un mar en calma donde la felicidad besaba a los presentes, se transmutó en una gran marejada, olas y vientos que pusieron a la embarcación al peligro de un hundimiento. Donde el temor, los mareos y los vómitos, cambiaron la armonía inicial, en un momento de tensión que nunca olvidaremos.

En el Universo todo opera de manera dual, siguiendo el principio o Ley de Polaridad. Todo tiene sus pares de opuestos, e.j., día y noche, salud y enfermedad, amor y odio, vida y muerte, triunfo y fracaso, acción y reacción. Así se repite a todos los niveles, desde el molecular hasta lo más visible del nivel físico, pasando por todo un espectro vibracional entre ambos extremos.

Pero aterricemos esta intro, con tres ejemplos prácticos reales. Dos a nivel biológico, de especies terrestres menores, y de acuáticas mayores; y otro, relacionado a una situación de contingencia atmosférica, que involucró a un grupo de actores cubanos y al personal de apoyo.

A calm sea where happiness kissed those present, transmuted into a great swell, waves and winds that put the boat in danger of sinking. Where fear, seasickness and vomiting, changed the initial harmony, in a moment of tension that we will never forget.

In the Universe everything operates in a dual way, following the principle or Law of Polarity. Everything has its pairs of opposites, e.g., day and night, health and sickness, love and hate, life and death, triumph and failure, action and reaction. This is repeated at all levels, from the molecular to the most visible of the physical level, passing through a whole vibrational spectrum between both extremes.

But let us ground this introduction with three real practical examples. Two at the biological level, of minor terrestrial species, and of major aquatic species; and another, related to an atmospheric contingency situation, which involved a group of Cuban actors and support personnel.

Pequeños Insectos:

Especies de insectos tan pequeños como los mosquitos, son los causantes de grandes problemas de salud en el hombre. Las queridas hembras, son las que desesperan con su zumbido, y las que nos pican, usando su probóscide para extraer nuestra sangre. No lo hacen por simple maldad. Ellas necesitan de nuestro fluido para producir sus huevos.

Mantén tu piel limpia, así de simple. El sudor los atrae por sus compuestos volátiles ácidos. También el ambiente caluroso, y las multitudes donde hay más concentración de dióxido de carbono (CO2). Por eso, les encanta volar alrededor de nuestras cabezas: porque liberamos alrededor de un 16 porciento de CO2 en nuestra fase de espiración, tanto por la nariz como por la boca.

Mientras las luchadoras hembras alfa hacen de todo para chuparnos la sangre; los mosquitos machos, vuelan entre las bellas flores, para alimentarse del néctar de éstas y del jugo de algunas frutas. De esa manera, cumplen su función ecológica: como eficientes polinizadores, que garantizan la reproducción de las plantas.

La diversidad de flores, a su vez, son fuente de alimentación de otras especies; mientras que los detestables mosquitos y sus larvas, son el manjar de aves, peces y de murciélagos.

Small Insects:

Species of insects as small as mosquitoes, are the cause of major health problems in man. The dear females are the ones that make us desperate with their buzzing, and the ones that bite us, using their probosis to extract our blood. They do not do it out of simple malice. They need our fluid to produce their eggs.

Do you want to be stung less?

Keep your skin clean, it's as simple as that. Sweat attracts them because of its acidic volatile compounds. So does the hot environment, and crowds where there is more concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2). That's why they love to fly around our heads: because we release about 16 percent of CO2 in our exhalation phase, both through our nose and mouth.

While the feisty alpha females do everything they can to suck our blood, the male mosquitoes fly among the beautiful flowers to feed on their nectar and the juice of some fruits. In this way, they fulfill their ecological function: as efficient pollinators, which guarantee the reproduction of plants.

The diversity of flowers, in turn, are a source of food for other species, while the detestable mosquitoes and their larvae are a delicacy for birds, fish and bats.

Ecosistemas Marinos:

A nivel acuático, cada organismo tiene sus funciones independientes que aportan un resultado final, para ayudar a la armonía del medio donde viven.

Los grandes tiburones, a los que muchas personas temen, están posicionados en la cúspide de la cadena trófica o alimentaria, regulando la integridad de las especies que están por debajo, sobre todo, las enfermas o vulnerables.

Las especies para vivir, dependen de otras. Y daño que ocurra en cada una, afectará al resto, donde finalmente será el hombre el afectado, al ser el consumidor final.

Marine Ecosystems:

At the aquatic level, each organism has its independent functions that provide an end result, to help the harmony of the environment where they live.

Large sharks, which many people fear, are positioned at the top of the food chain, regulating the integrity of the species below them, especially those that are sick or vulnerable.

In order to live, species depend on others. And whatever damage occurs in each one, will affect the rest, where ultimately it will be man who will be affected, being the final consumer.

Disturbios ambientales:

En el año 2014, quizás algunos cubanos recuerden una Telenovela que salió al aire, titulada “Playa Leonora”, escrita por Alberto Luberta Martínez y dirigida por Armando Toledo.

Trataba sobre una construcción turística que harían ingenieros y constructores, en una zona costera de la Habana. Ahí ocurrió una explosión de causa desconocida, con contaminación y muerte de especies marinas; que propiciaron una investigación por parte de buzos y biólogos, para evaluar lo sucedido, y el impacto ecológico que podría traer la realización de ese proyecto.

En ella se aglutinaron, artistas de gran talla como Lieter Ledesma, Camila Arteche, Armando Tomey, Ketty de la Iglesia, Ray Cruz, Yuni Bolaños y la actuación especial de: Martha del Río, Aramis Delgado, Manuel Porto, Héctor Hechemendía, Patricio Wood, Blanca Rosa Blanco y Roberto Perdomo

Algunos de ellos, tuvieron que pasar un curso de buceo, que se organizó por mi centro laboral, el antiguo Instituto de Oceanología, ubicado en el reparto Flores de la Habana. Nueve buzos profesionales se encargaron de apoyar la parte de buceo, y yo, del Aseguramiento Médico de la Actividad Subacuática.

Environmental disturbances:

In 2014, perhaps some Cubans remember a Telenovela that aired, entitled "Playa Leonora ", written by Alberto Luberta Martínez and directed by Armando Toledo.

It was about a tourist construction that engineers and builders would do, in a coastal area of Havana. There, an explosion of unknown cause occurred, with contamination and death of marine species, which led to an investigation by divers and biologists to evaluate what happened and the ecological impact that could bring the realization of this project.

It brought together artists of great stature such as Lieter Ledesma, Camila Arteche, Armando Tomey, Ketty de la Iglesia, Ray Cruz, Yuni Bolaños and the special performance of: Martha del Río, Aramis Delgado, Manuel Porto, Héctor Hechemendía, Patricio Wood, Blanca Rosa Blanco and Roberto Perdomo.

Some of them, had to pass a diving course, which was organized by my work center, the former Institute of Oceanology, located in the Flores neighborhood of Havana. Nine professional divers were in charge of supporting the diving part, and I was in charge of the Medical Insurance of the Underwater Activity.

Era un día soleado, y con un mar en calma que prometía una buena filmación submarina. Estábamos en 2 embarcaciones a más de 200 metros de la costa, entre Cojímar y la zona de Tarará.

Un ambiente relajado, entre risas, cuentos y el olor a mar, invadía a los presentes. De pronto, el cielo azul despejado se vistió de nubes grises. El viento empezó a embestir a raudales, rizando el mar y generando una gran marejada después.

Las embarcaciones empezaron a moverse como un corcho en aguas movidas. El mareo empezó a sentirse entre la mayoría. Algunos actores empezaron con náuseas y vómitos, por la cinetosis creada por los fuertes movimientos a bordo.

Al disturbio físico reinante, se sumó el psicológico, con la entrada de agua al interior del barco principal, hasta que dejó de funcionar su motor, producto de su ahogamiento. El acúmulo de líquido era cada vez mayor. Algunos de los presentes, temían de un posible hundimiento al estilo Titanic, pero en otras condiciones, en medio del día, con un mar embravecido y en nuestro país.

Quedamos totalmente a la deriva. El entorno apacible y armónico, se transmutó es una escena real, como un filme de horror y espanto. Hombres sacando agua con envases plásticos, y yo haciendo vericuetos para poder inyectar antihistamínicos; y activando al Sistema Integrado de Urgencias Médicas (SIUM), para que nos esperaran con una ambulancia en la marina.

It was a sunny day, with a calm sea that promised a good underwater filming. We were on two boats more than 200 meters from the coast, between Cojímar and Tarará.

A relaxed atmosphere, with laughter, stories and the smell of the sea, invaded those present. Suddenly, the clear blue sky was covered with gray clouds. The wind began to rush in torrents, rippling the sea and generating a great swell afterwards.

The boats began to move like a cork in choppy waters. Seasickness began to be felt among the majority. Some actors began to feel nauseous and vomit, due to the kinetosis created by the strong movements on board.

To the prevailing physical disturbance was added the psychological one, with the entry of water into the main boat, until its engine stopped working, as a result of drowning. The accumulation of liquid was increasing. Some of those present feared a possible Titanic-style sinking, but in other conditions, in the middle of the day, with a rough sea and in our country.

We were totally adrift. The peaceful and harmonious environment was transmuted into a real scene, like a film of horror and fright. Men taking out water with plastic containers, and me doing my best to inject antihistamines; and activating the Sistema Integrado de Urgencias Médicas (SIUM), so that they would wait for us with an ambulance in the marina.

Por suerte, se pudo alertar por vía de radiocomunicación, al punto de control más cercano. Nos hicieron llegar una embarcación mayor, que nos remolcó hasta la marina de Tarará.
La ironía ambiental fue que durante el trayecto a tierra, el tiempo mejoró, y llegamos con un sol brillante que supo regalarnos una despedida sin más contratiempos.

Almorzamos algo para reponer energía, y mientras lo hacíamos, recordábamos y hasta reíamos de todo lo sucedido. Así es el cubano, aún en momentos de calamidad, mantiene su ingenio y humor, para lidiar con fuerza ante las contingencias que se presenten.

Los que ven a diario una telenovela o un filme, disfrutan del resultado final. Solo ven la parte visible, como ese Iceberg hermoso que vemos o deleitamos en una foto. Sin olvidar, que bajo la superficie del agua, se encuentra la mayor porción, la no visible, formando parte de su totalidad.

Fortunately, the nearest checkpoint was alerted by radio communication. A larger boat was dispatched and towed us to the Tarará marina.
The environmental irony was that during the trip to land, the weather improved, and we arrived with a bright sun that was able to give us a farewell without further setbacks.

We had some lunch to replenish our energy, and while we did so, we remembered and even laughed about everything that had happened. That is the Cuban way, even in times of calamity, he keeps his wit and humor, to deal with the contingencies that arise.

Those who watch a soap opera or a film every day enjoy the final result. They only see the visible part, like that beautiful Iceberg we see or enjoy in a photo. Without forgetting, that under the surface of the water, there is the greater portion, the non-visible, forming part of its totality.
