Something embarrassing happened to me today and since I am trying not to take myself too seriously here I decided to share with you my story.
Here there is some context
Basically in the last couple of days I've got hooked listening to an audiobook of one of my favorite authors of historical fiction "Bernard Cornwell". The title of the book is "The burning land". It's basically the story of a saxon warrior being raised by danish raiders and fighting for what one day will become England. They even made a TV show from it called "the last kingdom" I really recommend it. Anyway, especially in this book, "The burning land" there are several battles being described, obviously you will also find the characters of opposite factions greeting each other with realistic insults and using colorful expressions. The author is definitely not shy in describing all kind of situations.
What happened
I was at my office, near my desk there are offices of professors, doctors and also administrative staff. In other words it's not a very casual environment. Anyway, today I had to leave my desk to go to the laboratory to perform an experiment but the battery of my phone was really low so I decided not to bring it with me and instead charge it on my desk. Now, in the past there were episodes of theft in our office, thus I could not leave my phone in plain view so I decided to use a scientific article about crystallography as a deterrent for thieves. That article was so boring that it's tough to read even the full title without yawning, so I guessed my phone would be safe and hidden. Science does to thieves what the holy water does to vampires.
I went to the laboratory for about one hour and when I got back to my desk I could hear a familiar voice. As I got closer I noticed people laughing at me, oh shit someone was playing the exact audiobook I was listening to. Actually the voice came from my desk, now I could hear better, the actor of the audiobook was shouting insults like "arseling" (which is whatever/whoever comes out of an arse) or "weasel" "whore" etc..It was so loud that everyone could ear it and there were professors holding meetings in their office and administrative staff talking at the phone, it was so embarrassing.
Basically what happened is that the screen of my phone was still active when I covered it with the article and accidentally it must have pressed "play". Since I use tune-in to listen to audiobooks, usually it takes a while for an audiobook to buffer, probably that's why I did not hear it immediately after leaving my desk and obviously I had the volume of my phone set at maximum because my earphones are old and don't work really well.
If that wasn't embarrassing enough, after a few minutes after I turned off my phone, a professor approaches me a bit red in his face. I thought that now he would start complaining about the accident and I was about to apologize when he said instead: "You just turned it off when they were about to go to battle, now I want to know how it ends, can you lend me your phone so I can finish listening to it in my office?".
Gosh sometimes my days are weird.
