Corporate Pollution and Accountability: Is the Law Fair to Everyone?

If we look at the world , we face numerous challenges, but pollution stands out as one of the most significant. Controlling pollution is becoming increasingly difficult, and the problem is escalating day by day. Pollution is generated at an individual level—whether through the vehicles people drive on the roads or the manufacturing processes of the companies that produce the parts for those vehicles. The crucial question is: what action is the government taking against those responsible for this pollution? In many countries, strict regulations and heavy fines are imposed on polluters, resulting in greater cleanliness; however, in other nations, the issue is not treated with sufficient seriousness. Even when legal provisions exist, they are often not enforced—or if they are, enforcement is limited to the common citizen rather than extending to larger entities. While the waste generated by an individual causes some harm, the waste produced by a large company can be far more damaging—especially when chemical processes are involved, leading to chemical waste contaminating rivers, drains, and even drinking water supplies. People living in slums often consume this contaminated water, which can have severe consequences for their health and lead to serious illnesses.

The government should not allow any form of discrimination in the laws it enacts; yet, why does it fail to take action when major companies commit such violations? I frequently come across reports on social media about industrial waste finding its way into rivers via canals and drains, polluting even clean water. Although these issues are brought to the government's attention and complaints are lodged, no real solution is found. This is a matter of serious concern, as it is the government's responsibility to oversee these matters and take strict action; however, it often remains silent when it comes to large corporations. Occasionally, under intense public pressure, the government takes some action, but once the situation calms down, things tend to revert to the way they were before.

Such incidents are frequently observed in countries where environmental regulations are treated with negligence. Although people do raise their voices, nothing changes because these companies are often run by government insiders or influential individuals with high-level connections; consequently, the government fails to take strict action, allowing the companies to continue acting arbitrarily. Factory regulations mandate strict adherence to specific procedures—particularly regarding the disposal of waste materials, which involves strict rules on location and disposal methods, as well as required testing—yet companies often ignore these protocols to cut costs, opting for the cheapest available methods. Ultimately, the people who bear the brunt of this are those directly affected by the consequences. Past documentaries and news reports have clearly illustrated how industrial waste causes pollution and highlighted the dangerous levels of contamination involved; despite widespread awareness of these issues, companies continue to operate without regard for the rules.

When a company disposes of its waste in an eco-friendly manner, the process entails higher costs; consequently, in the pursuit of greater profits, companies often resort to cost-cutting measures that can cause severe damage to the environment. The government must ensure that everyone—whether an individual or a large corporation—strictly adheres to environmental regulations. Failure to do so today could lead to such extreme environmental pollution that breathing itself becomes difficult. While cleanliness campaigns and awareness drives regarding environmental conservation are conducted widely, we must treat this matter seriously and take personal responsibility for protecting the environment; if every individual assumes this responsibility, our surroundings will remain free from filth and pollution.
