Hello everyone,I would like to share with you all my progress with sewing.I’ve known myself to be a fast learner but this time,I’m learning really faster than I expected. Oh and nobody told me sewing was full of maths,so many calculations all the time.

Anyway,I wanted to make a simple but elegant dress for my second project. As a size small,it’s very easy to get fabric from my cousin(teacher) to sew. “After all, just 2 yards would be more than enough for me”,she would normally say. I also asked her to give me a fabric that is a little challenging to work with and she gave me satin. It took me about 10 hours to finish this project (breaks included). Before I started I sketched the style I wanted down as a guide.

The materials I used were:

  • 2 yards of fabric
  • measuring tape
  • sewing machine
  • marker
  • a pair of scissors
  • Fabric Stiffener
  • zip

I started by marking the fabric with my measurements taking into consideration the allowances.

I then cut what I marked from the fabric and joined the back of the dress including the zip line.

I now ironed the zip line so the outline is well seen. From there, I marked and cut the sleeves and the collar of the dress from the remaining fabric and sewed them(individually).

I now unraveled the stitches at the zip line, attached the zip and the collar to dress. At this point I got too excited that it was coming together as I wanted and just had to have a feel already.

I then joined the sleeves to the dress and made two buttons at the back of the collar to be able to close the collar.Even though I wanted to design the front part with buttons, I didnt have any so I ended here.

The result.

I was really nervous as to how this was going to turn out but as a three weeks old apprentice,I think I did my best and this isn’t so bad as I thought it would be.
I really enjoyed making this and I hope you like it.
