I was almost 16 years when I went to live with my grandma. I had lived with my mom all those years and even though I was the only girl, I didn’t even know how to hold a broom, literally. My mom had tried so many times to get me to learn you know, the basic things I needed to know. I on the other hand had other plans and of course they did not involve anything about the kitchen.
In fact I only wanted to be a career woman, own a fleet of cars, some houses here and there, and my plan to get there was basically to study all my life. Back to when I went to live with my grandma. My grandma was one of the most disciplined women I’ve ever seen in my life. During my early days in her house she sounded scary most times and that’s because I didn’t know how to do anything. Anytime, I heard her voice, I felt scared not knowing what else she was going to ask me to do.
Once she realized I didn’t know how to do anything, she created a routine for me. I had to sweep the yard every morning, wash the dishes all the time, and scrub the bathroom every Saturday. Trust me when I say I felt like a step daughter living with a wicked grandmother. I thought she hated me because aside the routine, I had other random chores to do during the day. Oh and they were all impromptu. She could just call me from my sleep and I would have to wake up and do what she’s asking of me.
Sometimes, it felt like I was in the military school because she was always hard on me. Even though I was stubborn, I eventually started changing. There are so many things I learned from her and even till date, I bless the day I stepped foot in her house. When I left her place to my mom’s, my mom was surprised to see me sweeping in the morning. She was more shocked to see me doing the dishes. All that I learned from her were even more helpful when I went to the university.
During all those times, as I said, I thought she hated me but after I grew up and started seeing life as it is, I got to know how much she loved me. I will always be grateful to her for how she changed me. When I think about how my Grandma took me from 0 to 100, it feels she definitely was the Angel that I needed at that time.
Thank you so much Grandma and I miss you everyday. Keep resting and being my guardian Angel. You will forever be in my heart.
