I was delighted to write about this often overlooked country between Eastern and Western Europe. I first traveled to Slovenia about 10 years ago, on a whim, from Trieste. There was some confusion about visas, and my companion and I were stopped at border for a reason I can't remember. So we entered at another border point; no visas needed. And what a whirlwind trip it was. I still remember looking up at the steep hairpin turns of the Julian Alps and having to back down at some point because I lost my nerve.
