After spending time in Lake Bled, our family of four headed to Kranjska Gora, one of Slovenia's most charming alpine towns. We had rented a car in Ljubljana, and I was pleasantly surprised by how easy and stress-free driving was throughout the country.
For visitors from the United States, Slovenia is a particularly comfortable place to drive. Cars are left-hand drive and traffic keeps to the right, just like back home. Road signs are easy to understand, major routes are well maintained, and the roads are generally wider and less intimidating than some of the mountain roads I have experienced in southern Spain or Greece. Within a short time, I felt completely at ease behind the wheel.
Rather than staying in a hotel, we rented an apartment in Kranjska Gora, which worked perfectly for a family. The town has a relaxed alpine atmosphere and, during the summer, feels lively without being crowded. One of my favorite places was the town square. Surrounded by mountain views, caf茅s, and traditional Slovenian architecture, it was the kind of place where it was enjoyable to simply sit and watch daily life unfold.
We spent several days exploring the local lakes and natural areas around Kranjska Gora. Among all the nearby attractions, Zelenci Nature Reserve stood out as one of my favorites. The short hike around the emerald-green pond was easy enough for the whole family and offered beautiful views of crystal-clear water bubbling up from underground springs. The surrounding wetlands, wooden boardwalks, and backdrop of the Julian Alps made it feel like a hidden gem despite its accessibility.
One of the highlights of our stay was a scenic day trip that crossed three countries. Starting from Kranjska Gora, we drove over the spectacular Vr拧i膷 Pass, Slovenia's highest mountain pass. The road climbs through a series of sharp switchbacks and offers stunning views of the Julian Alps. From there we descended into the breathtaking So膷a River Valley, home to some of the most vividly turquoise water I have ever seen.
Continuing west, we crossed into Italy and visited Lago del Predil, a beautiful alpine lake tucked beneath dramatic mountain peaks. The combination of clear water and rugged scenery made it one of the prettiest lakes we encountered during our trip.
Not content with visiting only two countries in a day, we continued north into Arnoldstein, Austria, before making our way back toward Slovenia via the Wurzenpass. What started as a pleasant afternoon drive turned into an unforgettable experience when a late-afternoon thunderstorm rolled into the mountains. Dark clouds gathered over the peaks, rain began to fall, and flashes of lightning illuminated the surrounding ridges. While the weather added some excitement to the journey, the roads remained in excellent condition, and we never felt unsafe.
Looking back, Kranjska Gora was much more than a stop between destinations. It was the perfect base for exploring the meeting point of Slovenia, Italy, and Austria while still providing a relaxing mountain-town atmosphere. Between the easy hiking, beautiful lakes, scenic mountain drives, and the opportunity to visit three countries in a single day, it became one of the most memorable parts of our Slovenian adventure.
If you're visiting Slovenia with family and enjoy a combination of outdoor activities, alpine scenery, and road-trip flexibility, I would highly recommend spending a few days in Kranjska Gora. For us, it was the ideal blend of relaxation and exploration.
