Soviet doctor Leonid Rogozov is undergoing surgery in 1961.
Leonid Rogozov, 27, was one of the members of the Sixth Soviet Mission to the South Pole (1960-1961). On April 30, 1961, he was subjected to a serious infection that called for an urgent surgical operation to remove the appendix.

He underwent surgery on his own. The surgery was performed under the influence of local anesthesia and lasted for an hour and 45 minutes. He was assisted by a mechanical engineer and a weather scientist whose role was to handle the surgical instruments and to direct a mirror into the wound so that he could see the surgery. He died in 2000 and the tools he used in this surgery are still kept in a museum in St. Petersburg.
