The guileful paddy-bird and a tactical crab
"မာယာမ်ားေသာ ဗ်ိဳင္းႏွင့္ ပရိယာယ္ၾကြယ္ေသာ ပုစြန္လံုး"

Once on a time the Bodhisatta came to life in a certain forest-haunt as the Tree-sprite of a tree which stood near a certain lotus-pond. In those days the water used every summer to fall very low in a certain pond, not very big,—which was plentifully stocked with fish. Catching sight of these fish, a certain paddy-bird said to himself, " I must find a way to cajole and eat these fish." So he went and sat down in deep thought by the side of the water.

ေရွးအခါက ဘုရားေလာင္းသည္ တေစၧေျခာက္ေသာ ေတာအုပ္အတြင္းမွ ၾကာကန္တစ္ကန္အနီးရွိ သစ္ပင္တစ္ပင္တြင္ ႐ုကၡစိုးနတ္ ျဖစ္ေနခဲ့၏။ ထိုအခါက ငါးမ်ားစြာရွိေနေသာ ထိုေရကန္ထဲသို႔ ေႏြရာသီတြင္ ေရအနည္းငယ္သာစီးဝင္၏။ ေရမ်ားမ်ား မဝင္ေပ။ ဗ်ိဳင္းတစ္ေကာင္သည္ ထိုငါးမ်ားကို ျမင္ေတြ႔ျပီး "ေခ်ာ့ေမာ့ေျမွာက္ပင့္တဲ့ နည္းလမ္းရွာျပီး ဒီငါးေတြကို ငါ စားရမယ္" ဟု ေရ႐ြတ္ေန၏။ ထို႔ေနာက္ ေရကမ္းစပ္သြားျပီး နက္နက္နဲနဲေတြးရင္း ထိုင္ေနခဲ့သည္။

Now when the fishes caught sight of him, they said, "Of what are you thinking, my friend, as you sit there?" "I am thinking about you," was the reply. "And what is friend thinking about us?" "The water in this pool being low, food scarce, and the heat intense,—I was wondering to myself, as I sat here, what in the water you fishes would do."
"And what are we to do, my friend"
"Well, if you'll take my advice, will take you up one by one in my beak, and carry you all off to a fine large pool covered with the varieties of lotuses, and there put you down."

ငါမ်ားက သူ႔ကို ျမင္ေသာအခါ "အဲဒီမွာထိုင္ျပီး ဘာေတြေတြးေနတာလဲ မိတ္ေဆြ" ဟု ေမးျမန္းၾက၏။
"ကၽြႏ္ုပ္ သင္တို႔အေၾကာင္းကို ေတြးေနတာ" ဟု ဗ်ိဳင္းက ျပန္ေျပာသည္။
"ကၽြန္ေတာ္တို႔နဲ႔ ပတ္သက္ျပီး ဘယ္လိုအေၾကာင္းကို မိတ္ေဆြက ေတြးေနတာလဲ"။
"ဒီေရကန္ထဲက ေရေတြ နည္းနည္းလာတာ၊ စားစရာလည္း ရွားပါးလာတာ၊ အပူခ်ိန္လည္း ျပင္းထန္လာတာနဲ႔ပတ္သက္ျပီး ေရထဲကငါးေတြ ဘာလုပ္ၾကမွာပါလိမ့္လို႔ ကၽြႏ္ုပ္တစ္ဦးတည္း ဒီမွာထိုင္စဥ္းစားေနတာပါ"။
"ကၽြန္ေတာ္တို႔ ဘယ္လိုလုပ္ရမလဲ မိတ္ေဆြ"။
"ေကာင္းျပီ ကၽြႏ္ုပ္ေပးတဲ့ အၾကံဉာဏ္ကို သင္တို႔ လက္ခံမယ္ဆိုရင္ သင္တို႔ကို ကၽြႏ္ုပ္ရဲ႕ ႏႈတ္သီးနဲ႔ တစ္ေကာင္ျပီးတစ္ေကာင္ ကိုက္ခ်ီသြားမယ္။ ျပီးရင္ ၾကာမ်ိဳးေပါင္းစံုနဲ႔ ေဝဆာေနတဲ့ သာယာေသာ ေရကန္ၾကီးဆီ ေခၚေဆာင္သြားျပီး ထည့္ထားေပးမယ္"။

"My friend," said they, "no paddy-bird ever took the slightest thought for fishes since the world began. Your desire is to eat us one by one."
"No; I will not eat you while you trust me," said the paddy-bird. "If you don't take my word that there is such a pond, send one of your number to go with me and see for himself."
Believing the paddy-bird, the fish presented to him a great big fish who they thought would be a match for the paddy-bird whether afloat or ashore ; and they said, " Here's the one to go with you."

"မိတ္ေဆြ ကမ႓ာဦးအစကထဲက ဘယ္ဗ်ိဳင္းကမွ ငါးေတြအတြက္ အနည္းငယ္မွ် စဥ္းစားေပးခဲ့တာမရွိဘူး။ သင့္ ဆႏၵဟာ ငါတို႔ကို တစ္ေကာင္ျပီး တစ္ေကာင္ စားလိုတာပဲျဖစ္ရမယ္"။
"မဟုတ္ပါဘူး ကၽြႏ္ုပ္ကို ယံုၾကည္တယ္ဆိုရင္ မစားပါဘူး။ ထိုေရကန္ၾကီး ရွိတယ္ဆိုတဲ့ ကၽြႏ္ုပ္စကားကို မယံုရင္ သင္တို႔ထဲက တစ္ေကာင္လိုက္လာျပီး ကိုယ္တိုင္ၾကည့္ဖို႔ ကၽြႏ္ုပ္နဲ႔အတူ ထည့္လိုက္ပါ" ဟု ဗ်ိဳင္းက ေျပာဆိုသည္။
ငါးမ်ားသည္ ဗ်ိဳင္းေျပာသည္ကို ယံုၾကည္သြားျပီး ေရထဲမွာျဖစ္ေစ ကုန္းေပၚမွာျဖစ္ေစ ေနနိုင္ေသာ ဗ်ိဳင္းႏွင့္အဆင္ေျပမည္ဟု ယူဆသည့္ ငါးၾကီးတစ္ေကာင္ကို ျပျပီး "သင္နဲ႔ အတူလိုက္မယ့္ ငါးပဲ" ဟု ဆိုၾက၏။

The paddy-bird took the fish off" and put him in the pool, and after shewing him the whole extent of it, brought him back again and put him in along with the other fish in his old pond. And he held forth to them on the charms of the new pool. After hearing this report, they grew eager to go there, and said to the paddy-bird, " Very good, my friend; please take us there."
First of all, the paddy-bird took that big fish again and carried him off" to the edge of the pool, .so that he could see the water, but actually alighted in a tree which grew on the bank.

ဗ်ိဳင္းသည္ ထိုငါးကို ေခၚသြားျပီး ေရကန္အတြင္း ခ်ေပးလိုက္၏။ ေရကန္တစ္ခြင္လံုးကို ျပျပီးေနာက္ ျပန္ေခၚလာကာ ကန္အေဟာင္းအတြင္းသို႔ အျခားငါးမ်ားႏွင့္အတူ ျပန္ထာေပးလိုက္သည္။ ျပီးလွ်င္ ေရကန္၏ သာယာလွပပံုကို ငါးမ်ားအား ေလေက်ာရွည္ရွည္ ရွင္းျပလိုက္သည္။ ဤသတင္းစကားကို ၾကားရျပီးေနာက္ ေရကန္ဆီသို႔ သြားလိုေသာဆႏၵ ၾကီးထြားလာျပီး "ေကာင္းပါျပီ မိတ္ေဆြ ကၽြန္ေတာ္တို႔ကို အဲဒီပို႔ေပးပါ" ဟု ဗ်ိဳင္းကို ေတာင္းဆိုၾက၏။ ဗ်ိဳင္းသည္ ေစာေစာက အေကာင္ၾကီးၾကီး ငါးကိုပင္ ပထမဆံုး ကိုက္ခ်ီျပီး ေရမ်ားကို ျမင္ႏိုင္ရန္ ေရကန္အစပ္သို႔ သည္ေဆာင္လာခဲ့၏။ အမွန္ေတာ့ ကမ္းေပၚတြင္ ေပါက္ေနေသာ သစ္ပင္ေပၚ နားခဲ့ျခင္းျဖစ္သည္။

Dashing the fish down in a fork of the tree, he picked at it to death,—after which he picked him clean and let the bones fall at the foot of the tree. Then back he went and said, " I've thrown him in ; who's the next? " And so he took the fish one by one, and ate them all, till at last when he came back, he could not find another left. But there was still a crab remaining in the pond; so the paddy-bird, who wanted to eat him up too, said, "Mister crab, I've taken all those fishes away and turned them into a fine large pool covered all over with lotuses. Come along; I'll take you too."

ငါးကို သစ္ပင္ခြၾကားသို႔ တစ္ဟုန္ထိုးခ်ီေျပးျပီး အေသထိုးဆိတ္လိုက္သည္။ အျပတ္ရွင္းျပီးေနာက္ ငါးရိုးမ်ားကို သစ္ပင္ေျခရင္းသို႔ ပစ္ခ်ခဲ့၏။ တစ္ဖန္ ျပန္သြားျပီး "ကၽြႏ္ုပ္ သူ႔ကို ေရကန္ဆီ ပို႔ခဲ့ျပီ၊ ေနာက္ထပ္ ဘယ္သူ႔ကို ပို႔ေပးရမလဲ" ဟု ေမးလိုက္၏။ ဒီလိုႏွင့္ ငါးတစ္ေကာင္ျပီး တစ္ေကာင္ ကိုက္ခ်ီသြားျပီး အားလံုးကို စားပစ္လိုက္သည္။ ေနာက္ဆံုးေခါက္ ျပန္လာေသာအခါ ငါးတစ္ေကာင္မွ် မက်န္ေတာ့ေပ။ သို႔ေသာ္ ေရကန္ထဲတြင္ ပုစြန္လံုးတစ္ေကာင္ က်န္ရွိေန၏။ သို႔အတြက္ ပုစြန္ကိုပါ စားလိုေသာ ဗ်ိဳင္းက "မစၥတာ ပုစြန္ခင္မ်ား ကၽြန္ေတာ္ ငါးအားလံုးကို ကိုက္ခ်ီသြားျပီး ၾကာပန္းေတြ ဖံုးအုပ္ေနတဲ့ လွပ က်ယ္ဝန္းေသာ ေရကန္ထဲသို႔ ေ႐ႊ႕ေျပာင္းေပးျပီးပါျပီ။ ကၽြန္ေတာ္နဲ႔ အတူလိုက္ခဲ့ပါ။ သင္ကိုလည္း ပို႔ေပးပါမယ္" ဟု ဆို၏။

"How will you carry me there" said the crab.
"Why, in my beak, to be sure," said the paddy-bird.
"Ah, but you might drop me like that," said the crab; "I won't go with you."
"Don't be frightened; I'll keep tight hold of you all the way."
Thought the crab to himself, "He hasn't put the fish in the pool. But, if he would really put me in, that would be capital. If he does not,—why, I'll nip his head off and kill him."

"ကၽြန္ေတာ့္ကို ဘယ္လိုနည္းနဲ႔ အဲဒီေခၚသြားမွာလဲ" ဟု ပုစြန္ကေမး၏။
"စိတ္ခ်ရေအာင္ ကၽြန္ေတာ့္ရဲ႕ ႏႈတ္သီးနဲ႔ ကိုက္ခ်ီမွာပါ" ဟု ဗ်ိဳင္းက ျပန္ေျဖ၏။
"အယ္ အဲလိုဆိုရင္ ကၽြန္ေတာ္ ျပဳတ္က်မွာေပါ့။ သင္နဲ႔ မလိုက္ေတာ့ဘူး" ဟု ပုစြန္ကဆို၏။
"မေၾကာက္ပါနဲ႔။ တစ္လမ္းလံုး ျမဲျမဲ ကိုက္ထားမွာပါ"။
"သူ ငါးေတြကို ေရကန္ထဲ မပို႔ေလာက္ဘူး။ အကယ္၍ ငါ့ကို ေရကန္ထဲပို႔ေပးရင္ေတာ့ အလြန္ေကာင္းတာေပါ့။ မပို႔ေပးဘူးဆိုရင္ သူ႔ေခါင္းကို ညွပ္ပီး သတ္လိုက္မယ္" ဟု ပုစြန္က တစ္ေကာင္တည္း စဥ္းစား၏။

So he spoke thus to the paddy-bird, " You'd never be able to hold me tight enough, friend paddy-bird whereas we crabs have got an astonishingly tight grips. If I might take hold of your neck with my claws, I could hold it tight and then would go along with you."
Not suspecting that the crab wanted to trick him, the paddy-bird gave his assent. With his claws the crab gripped hold of the paddy-bird's neck as with the pincers of a smith, and said, " Now you can start."

ထိုသို႔ စဥ္းစားျပီး ဗ်ိဳင္းအား "သင္ ကၽြန္ေတာ့္ကို ျမဲျမဲ ခ်ီသြားႏိုင္မွာမဟုတ္ဘူး၊ အေဆြဗ်ိဳင္း ကၽြန္ေတာ္တို႔ ပုစြန္ေတြမွာ အလြန္အံ့အားသင့္ေလာက္ေအာင္ ျမဲတဲ့ ဆုပ္ကိုင္နည္းေတြရွိတယ္။ ကၽြန္ေတာ့္ရဲ႕ ညွပ္ေတြနဲ႔ သင့္ရဲ႕ လည္ပင္းကို ကိုင္လိုက္လို႔ရရင္ ကၽြန္ေတာ္ ျမဲျမဲျမံျမံ ကိုင္ထားျပီး သင္နဲ႔ လိုက္လာခဲ့မယ္" ဟု ေတာင္းဆိုသည္။ ပုစြန္က သူ႔ကို ပရိယာယ္ဆင္သည္ဟု သံသယမဝင္သည့္အတြက္ ဗ်ိဳင္းသည္ သေဘာတူလိုက္၏။ ပုစြန္သည္ ပန္းပဲသမား၏ သံညွပ္မ်ားကဲ့သို႔ေသာ ညွပ္မမ်ားျဖင့္ ဗ်ိဳင္း၏ လည္ပင္းကို ဆုပ္ကိုင္လိုက္ျပီး "ကဲ သင္ စထြက္ခြာလို႔ရျပီ" ဟု ေျပာလိုက္သည္။

The paddy-bird took him and shewed him the pool first, and then started off for the tree.
"The pool lies this way, friend," said the crab; "but you're taking me the other way."
I suppose you thought me your slave to lift you up and carry you about ! Just you cast your eye on that heap of bones at the foot of the tree ; as I ate up all those fish, so I will eat you too."

ဗ်ိဳင္းသည္ ပုဇြန္ကို ေခၚသြားျပီး ေရွးဦးစြာ ေရကန္ကို ျပသ၏။ ထို႔ေနာက္ သစ္ပင္ဆီ စတင္ထြက္ခြာလိုက္သည္။
မိတ္ေဆြ ေရကန္က ဒီဘက္မွာရွိတယ္၊"၊ သင္က ကၽြန္ေတာ့္ကို အျခားေနရာကို ေခၚသြားေနတယ္" ဟု ပုစြန္က ေျပာလိုက္သည္။
သင္က ကၽြန္ေတာ့္ကို သင့္ရဲ႕ ကၽြန္လို႔သေဘာထားျပီး ခ်ီမခိုင္းတယ္၊ ဟိုဟိုဒီဒီ ေခၚသြားခိုင္းတယ္လို႔ ယူဆတယ္။ သစ္ပင္ေျခရင္းက ဟို အရိုးပံု ၾကည့္လိုက္။ ငါးအားလံုးကို ကၽြန္ေတာ္စားပစ္လိုက္သလို သင့္ကိုလည္း စားမယ္။

Said the crab, "It was through their own folly that those fish were eaten by you ; but I shan't give you the chance of eating me. What I shall do is to kill you. For you, fool that you were, did not see that I was tricking you. If we die, we will both die together; I'll chop your head off." And so saying he gripped the paddy-bird's neck with his claws tightly. With his mouth wide open, and tears streaming from his eyes, the paddy-bird, trembling for his life, said, "Friend indeed I will not eat you! Spare my life!"
" Well, then, just step down to the pool and put me in," said the crab.

သူတို႔ရဲ႕ မိုက္မႈေၾကာင့္ ငါးေတြဟာ သင္ စားတာခံလိုက္ရတာ။ ကၽြန္ေတာ့္ကို စားခြင့္ေတာ့ သင္ မရဘူး။ ကၽြန္ေတာ္ကသာ သင့္ကို သတ္လို႔ရတာ။ သင္ဟာ အလြန္ မိုက္မဲသူပဲ။ ကၽြန္ေတာ္ ပရိယာယ္ဆင္တာကို သင္ မသိခဲ့ဘူး။ ေသမယ္ဆိုရင္ေတာင္ ကၽြန္ေတာ္တို႔ ႏွစ္ေကာင္လံုး အတူ ေသေစရမယ္။ သင့္ ေခါင္းကို ကၽြန္ေတာ္ ညွပ္ျဖတ္ပစ္လိုက္မယ္။ ထိုသို႔ ေျပာျပီး ဗ်ိဳင္း၏ လည္ပင္းကို ညွပ္မမ်ားျဖင့္ တင္းတင္းက်ပ္က်ပ္ ဆုပ္ကိုင္လိုက္၏။ ဗ်ိဳင္းမွာ မ်က္လံုးမွ မ်က္ရည္မ်ားစီးက်လာျပီး အသက္ေဘးမွ စိုးရိမ္ထိပ္လန္႔သြားကာ "မိတ္ေဆြ ကၽြႏ္ုပ္ သင့္ကို မစားပါဘူး။ ကၽြႏ္ုပ္အသက္ကို ခ်မ္းသာေပးပါ" ဟု ပါးစပ္ျပဲႏွင့္ ေတာင္းပန္ရွာ၏။
"ေကာင္းျပီ ဒီလိုဆို ကၽြႏ္ုပ္ကို ေရကန္မွာခ်ပီး ေရထဲ လႊတ္ေပးပါ" ဟု ပုစြန္က ေတာင္းဆို၏။

Then the paddy-bird turned back and stepped down as directed to the pool, and placed the crab on the mud, at the water-edge. But the crab, before entering the water, nipped off the paddy-bird's head as deftly as if he were cutting a lotus stalk with a knife. The Tree-fairy who dwelt in the tree, marking this wonderful thing, made the whole forest ring with applause repeating this stanza in sweet tones :

ထိုအခါမွ ဗ်ိဳင္းသည္ ျပန္လွည့္ျပီး ဦးတည္လာသည့္ ေရကန္တြင္ ခ်ေပးကာ ေရစပ္မွ ႐ႊံေပၚသို႔ ပုစြန္ကို တင္ေပးေတာ့သည္။ ပုစြန္သည္ ေရထဲမဆင္းခင္ ၾကာရိုးကို ဓားျဖင့္ ပိုင္ပိုင္ႏိုင္ႏိုင္ ျဖတ္သကဲသို႔ ဗ်ိဳင္း၏ ေခါင္းကို ညွပ္ျဖတ္လိုက္ေလသည္။ ဤအံ့ၾသဖြယ္ အျဖစ္ပ်က္ကို သတိျပဳမိေသာ သစ္ပင္ေပၚမွ ရုကၡစိုးနတ္သည္ တစ္ေတာလံုးကို လက္ခုတ္သံျဖင့္ ပဲ့တင္ထပ္ေစလွ်က္ ဤဂါထာကို အသံသာသာ က်ဴးရင့္ေလ၏။

Mark the guileful paddy-bird got nothing from the crab!
