Popcorn for... everyone? // Cotufas para... ¿todos?
I remember when I was a kid I used to visit the Bolivar square in the city of Caracas, Venezuela. There we could run, play, eat some delicious and handmade candy, meet some relatives.... But one thing I remember in particular is the large number of pigeons that frequented the place. It was common for us kids to buy cotufas (popcorn) but not all of them were for one, we shared some with the pigeons. As several of us did, all along the plaza you could see a large number of them on the ground eating those delicious snacks. Of course, usually the peace of the moment was interrupted when one of the younger children would run towards them to scare them and they would fly away, making that peculiar noise and he would enjoy the moment very much.
This post is not about pigeons, but I wanted you to understand where this idea came from: do the little birds that live near my house eat cotufa? Well, I wanted to find out, and here I tell you how it went. All images are mine, using my Canon EOS Rebel t3i camera.
Along with the usual camburs that are placed for them to feed on, I added some popcorn along the wall of my house, and waited. Although these little birds are very active in the early morning hours, they still look for these good opportunities to feed easily near us. So it doesn't take long from the time I bring them the food until the first one arrives.
I've shown you before some of the types of birds that roam our neighborhood. So this time I'll focus on the ones I haven't shown you yet, like this gray one, which I haven't introduced to you yet. To me, it looks like a grayish grosbeak. But I'm sure my neighbors will have a simpler and prettier name than that.
I found this specimen interesting. First of all, its gray color. For many years my favorite color was gray, and perhaps that has contributed to my wonder. But the truth is that many of the birds that have a lot of fame or sympathy tend to have more vivid and pure colors. However, here is this one that might go unnoticed in a mixed flock of birds, as it is.... ...gray (I know people like that). I'm sure he doesn't mind that he looks different. When you lift his little head you can notice a slight color difference in his throat: it's completely white. But I think his most distinctive detail is that white brush stroke above his eyes. It looks like a big white eyebrow painted by an apprentice makeup artist who overdid it. I must admit that I only noticed this quirk when I saw the photograph. I thought it was a nice touch.
Do birds have personalities? I don't dare to give an answer. But this little guy made me think about it, because as he began to vehemently eat the ripe camburs, he wouldn't let anyone else get close. So much so that it did not allow me to take any pictures of the others. Suddenly another bird would come to the wall and he would quickly shoo it away, making a loud noise and flying towards it. It made me laugh because the new one would take flight before the Picurero's onslaught but only to perch again on the other side of the fruit. Then, again, the first one would try to chase it away to the opposite side. No matter if it was a bird like him or a different one, the woodpecker would scare away anyone who came while he was eating. Sometimes he even did it with a full beak! I would yell at him from inside: "Swallow first, though! Eat quietly!".
¡Come tranquilo!"
It has been a pleasure to get to know this bird, which surely its designer with an impeccable taste and knowledge of neutral colors, decided to decorate this specimen with colors that combine with any other, without being the one that stands out in a group. Again, I know people like this, and they are comfortable with going under the table. What's the problem?
The next species I was able to photograph was another gray one. Something particular happened with this one. When I showed the photos to my mother, she quickly said when she saw this one: "That's a paraulata ". And then she started to tell me that my father had one in his house when I was a child (obviously I don't remember that, and maybe I wasn't even born) and he liked it very much because of its characteristic song. Even his neighbors could identify it and it seemed to make it popular. So I label this little bird as a paraulata.
Again, a masterful combination of tones is evident in its plumage. Although its little body has a sort of silver-gray, its wings keep a darker gray. There its feathers are quite long (compared to its proportion) and the tips may protrude at the end of its body. So when deployed they must also have an important size. You can see that this is a well thought out and designed feature, because its tail seems to me to bear a close resemblance as well. It is straight, and seems to be always erect. When standing on the wall or on the ground, its tail looks like a toy lever that you have to turn to give it power and make it work. This is one of the few birds that I have seen come to the ground to look around. It is there that I can perceive how big it is. His quick movements and some of his little hopping movements are a lot of fun.
Although my mother can easily remember how my father's paraulata sang, I still cannot distinguish his singing. I am just learning to fine tune my hearing and be able to identify them. This lone bird was able to eat cambur with ease, just by looking around. He seemed very confident that all would be well.
Now, did you notice one detail? Which of these two birds ate the popcorn I left for them? None of them! They ignored it completely. They went for the aromatic, glowing, ripe, ripe, ripe, ripe, ripe, ripe, ripe, ripe, ripe, ripe, ripe, ripe, ripe, ripe. Well, they sure know how to eat natural, don't they? The truth is that by the end of the afternoon I was somewhere between happy and disappointed. Happy because I was able to photograph birds that I had never photographed before, and disappointed because.... ...those cotufas could have been for me if I had known they didn't like!
Well, I know it's not that big of a deal. I ate some myself. So, even though there was popcorn for everyone, I now know that my feathered neighbors don't like it. Because everyone else I've already shown you also ignored this food. So the next time I make it at my house, I'll try to pair it with a good family movie. Until next time!
Bueno, sé que no es para tanto. Yo me comí algunas.
